Texas has a chance to win all of their nonconference games for the first time since the 2015–2016 season. The No. 5-ranked team has been dominating their opponents this season, with an average margin of victory of 38.1 points in their first 12 games. Their last nonconference match will be played at home on Wednesday against Jackson State, a team that has faced numerous challenges.

After a convincing 104-51 win against UT-Rio Grande Valley, Texas (12-0) had a five-day break for the holidays. However, they need to quickly refocus as senior forward Taylor Jones (5-5) of Jackson State missed the last game due to a hip injury. Her status was classified as “day-to-day” at that time. In the absence of another player, Shaylee Gonzales stepped up and delivered an exceptional performance. She scored a season-high 21 points, including six 3-pointers, which tied her career-high. Gonzales’ contribution was crucial in securing the team’s fifth spot in the game, highlighting the depth and talent of the Longhorns’ roster.

It was later revealed that Gonzales had suffered an injury during the team’s shoot-around earlier that day. She was seen on the bench with a brace on her right knee and a noticeable limp. Despite this setback, she played for 32 minutes and showcased her skills.

Madison Booker, a rookie big who often fills in as a backup point guard, also had an impressive performance. She finished with 16 points, a season-high of nine assists, and only one turnover. Head coach Schaefer expressed that Booker’s performance did not come as a surprise.

Khadija Faye led the Texas team with 14 points, followed by DeYona Gaston with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Conversely, Andriana Avent led Jackson State with 11 points, although she struggled with her shooting, making only 2 of 12 attempts. Elan Jackson contributed by pulling down eight rebounds.
