Alabama men’s basketball team played their toughest game of the 2023-24 season on Saturday against rank-4 Purdue. There was a moment of excitement in the match when Mohammed Wague’s jersey got accidentally ripped, but it didn’t stop him from playing his best. But eventually, Purdue’s Zach Edey played a crucial role in leading his team to 92-86 victory in Toronto, Canada.
Alabama was unable to secure a victory despite a strong start. Coach Nate Oats had a solid game plan, and the team played with great intensity and effort throughout the match. But the result favored the Boilermakers.

Coach Nate Oats selected Mark Sears, Aaron Estrada, Rylan Griffen, Grant Nelson, and Mohamed Wague as the starting five to play the game. The game started with Estrada scoring the opening five points, including a floater and a three-pointer, while Nelson added a quick three-pointer, leading to a score of 8-0 in favor of Alabama.
However, in the second half, despite holding a 12-point lead, Alabama was unable to seal the victory and lost to Purdue, who improved to 9-1 while Alabama dropped to 6-3. Zach Edey, the 7’4” Boilermaker big man, proved to be too much for Alabama and scored 35 points in 37 minutes, earning him the title of resurrected NCAA Player of the Year.

Edey’s ability to move recklessly and foul without consequence, like literally tearing Mohamed Wague’s shirt before a whistle was blown, made it difficult for Alabama to play against him. Although officiating officials are not usually held accountable, it seemed like Alabama had a difficult order before seeming to play most of the game 5-on-8.

A spectacular gameplay
In terms of defense, Alabama was encroaching on the 7’4″, 300-pound Edey and exerting as much influence over him as they could. After long-range hits from Nelson and Sears, the Tide led 16-9 after the first out.
Another three-pointer from Sears gave the team a 19-9 advantage with 15:02 remaining in the quarter. Wague became a member of the long-range squad and made his first three-point shot of the season, bringing the score to 22-14.

The Tide’s defensive effort was impressive, even if they gave up 92 points. The Tide let up too many baskets in the second half tonight, tripling their total from the first, 9 to 5, and the explosive shooting tempo faltered exactly when it was most needed.
