Matt Painter lightly tossed a frisbee at the press conference. Mixed feelings of accomplishment and challenges ahead took over Matt Painter after a win over McNeese in the 2025 NCAA Division I second round. First things first, Purdue disproved the “Purdue always loses to a double-digit seed in March Madness” narrative, and now they face the challenge of playing the top-seed Houston Cougars. Purdue Boilermakers’ rise, consistency, and result-oriented program were all by-products of Matt Painter’s efforts.

It’s not that the team hasn’t seen a rough patch. During the two seasons (2012-2014) Purdue was among the programs that were at the bottom of the Big Ten, recording 16-18 and 15-17, respectively. Despite the setbacks, Purdue decided to stay with Painter.

16 NCAA tournament appearances in 19 seasons (considering the cancellation during the Covid-19 season), two times Elite Eight and seven times Sweet 16 participation in Painter’s bag speak volumes. Moreover, Purdue has maintained its status as one of the top 5 seeds for the Midwest region since the 2016-2017 season. With five conference titles and two Big Ten tourney championships, Matt certainly has cemented his position as one of the greatest coaches at Purdue.
