The UConn Huskies are an absolute powerhouse in the Big East. The defending champions have displayed some tremendous and quality basketball for the second season in a row. Consequently, they have a great chance to become the first team after Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators to win the National Championships consecutively. Their chemistry and spirit are just too much for their opponents to handle.
One of the main reasons why UConn can be a repeat champion is the depth that the team possesses. Despite Donovan Clingan’s unavailability due to injury, Connecticut still has enough firepower to get the job done. They’ve now won three games in his absence.

Their dynamic No.12 Cam Spencer has been in unbelievable touch this season. The senior guard has made a knack for turning the tides of the game in UConn’s favor at any point. His relentless attitude and hunger to win games for the Huskies has turned him into an unstoppable force. Another athlete who has stepped in and delivered for UConn is their sophomore forward Alex Karaban. The 21-year-old just knows how to make the right play. He may be not as fast and athletic as Spencer, but he sure knows a thing or two about consistency. The 6 ft 8 in baller from Southborough, Massachusetts always finds a way to make an impact in the game even if he’s not scoring.
Point guard Tristen Newton is also one such athlete in that locker room who knows how to be a standout player. He is currently the joint top scorer in the team along with Cam Spencer and has bagged 227 points. In addition to this, he has the third-best numbers from the 3-point range scoring at 30.7% accuracy. His brisk movement with the ball makes him lethal as it is extremely difficult to guard a player like him.
What’s making UConn so special?
UConn seems to have found the right formula on how to approach their campaign this season as well. Just like their previous season, the Huskies are looking the most complete team in the Big East. They are slowly developing a reputation to play small and win. There are a lot of different ways in which Connecticut can beat their opponents hands down.
The oppositions have no answers for their aggressively offensive style of play as they can rip apart any defense with ease. At the same time, they are equally well-equipped to handle their defense. It is extremely difficult even for some of the quality players on the opposing team to get past the formidable guards of this squad.
Where’s the team sitting statistically?
The Huskies are currently the No.4 ranked team in the competition so far. They have scored a total of 1252 points at an average of 83.5 per game which places them 38th position in terms of scoring. When it comes to rebounds they are ranked 98th grabbing about 38.9 rebounds per game. Furthermore, they scaled a total of 269 assists this season while maintaining an average of 17.9 per game which has earned them an overall ranking of 27th in the tournament. UConn also has an impressive 50.5 field goal percentage and can bury 34% of their shots from the 3-point range. Also, they have converted 73.6% of their free throws in the 15 games they’ve played so far.
