Paige Bueckers and UConn continue their dominance in the NCAA women’s division. The No.1 ranked Connecticut Huskies took down the Georgetown Hoyas 78-42 in a one-sided encounter to lift their 22nd Big East Tournament title. As a result, they head into the March Madness with much-needed momentum.

However, their resounding victory was not the only highlight of the game. After losing Aaliyah Edwards to a broken nose earlier, UConn almost faced a similar situation with their star point guard.

The Huskies were in total control with a 24-point lead early in the third quarter. At this time, a failed beyond-the-arc attempt from Georgetown’s Yasmin Ott deflected off the rim and was up for grabs for the players beneath it. In an attempt to capitalize on the rebound, Bueckers suffered a hit on her nose from the Hoyas’ No.1 Kelsey Ransom. Following this, Bueckers was suffering from continuous bleeding which compelled a stoppage of play.

In the replay, it was evident that Bueckers got smacked across the face by Ransom. In addition to this, the 22-year-old guard was disappointed that the officials didn’t have closer look at Kelsey Ransom’s contact with her nose. Nonetheless, after sharing a laugh with Edwards on the sideline, the dynamic No.5 marched her way onto the court.

Meanwhile, this is not the first nose incident that coach Geno Auriemma and her team faced this season.

UConn’s earlier nose scare

Earlier, in UConn’s win over Providence, their impactful center Aaliyah Edwards broke her nose. In a fight for a rebound with Friars’ Sarah Bandoma, a severe elbow to her nose resulted in Edwards missing out on the action for the remainder of the Big East Tournament. Luckily, after further evaluation, she didn’t suffer any concussion and will be back in action in the NCAA tournament.

This was confirmed by Auriemma himself soon after the game ended. He further added that she must be able to breathe freely and be comfortable before he will let her take the floor. The Huskies seem to battle injury-prone situations most of the time they step on the hardwood.  Evidently, they have lost their key players to season-ending injuries earlier as well. Hopefully, Paige Bueckers and Co. will try and avoid such adverse circumstances in their upcoming games.
