The Huskies have been torn into pieces in terms of player strength, however, they are still winning. UConn’s leading scorer Paige Bueckers scored 24 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist, with Aliyah Edwards contributing 20 points, 8 rebounds, and an assist in their latest outing. Freshman Ashlynn Shade added 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists.

After the game, Auriemma in a short interview said, “I knew, today was going to be a huge struggle – one, because you know, you’re playing a team that’s really determined after what happened the first game. And, uh, we’re really tired, as you could see we’re tired mentally, we’re tired physically.”

He weighed on the reality of losing half of his team to season-ending injuries saying, “I knew, it was going to be a grind. I knew, it was going to be tough, so I think we showed a lot of guts, a lot of character. Uh, you know, it’s not easy when you’re only playing five, six, seven guys at the most. Um, so, this one, we just gutted it out, so this was to me, this is one of the better wins we’ve had this year.”

Geno Auriemma’s path ahead

Geno Auriemma has led the UConn program to six undefeated seasons and 11 national championships, the most in the history of NCAA basketball. Despite these achievements including his own as a coach, he has always maintained his focus on the team and the bigger goal.

This mindset has led him to be just one step away, or a few games away from surpassing Tara VanDerveer’s record, and this year’s national championship title. The team’s unwavering and dominating performance is likely to pull the strings in their favor.
