The 12-time MVC tournament winners have decided to honor one of the most successful players in their program’s history on December 20th. The Bluejays recently announced that they will retire Doug McDermott’s iconic No.3 jersey.

The Bluejays took to Twitter and shared a post about their overwhelming gesture to Doug captioned, “No. 3 takes its place in the rafters!” Following this, basketball analyst Jeff Goodman re-shared the post on his Twitter handle along with a sniding comment. He wrote, “Crazy how they retire anyone’s jersey nowadays.”  Goodman doesn’t seem to be pleased by Creighton’s lavish gesture towards their power forward. Moreover, he believes that Doug’s contributions are not good enough to place him among the greatest basketball players in Creighton’s history. Goodman’s comment created quite a buzz on the internet as he received mixed reactions to his remark.

Meanwhile, the current head coach of the Creighton Bluejays and Doug’s father Greg McDermott couldn’t hide his elation following the announcement. He said, “We are thrilled to be able to retire Doug’s jersey. His impact on our basketball program was immense. He and his teammates helped usher in a new era of Creighton Basketball as we entered the BIG EAST. As his Father and Coach, I look forward to celebrating him with 18,000 Bluejay faithful on December 20th.”

He is also a three-time Conference Player of the Year and the only athlete to make it to the consensus First Team All-American in three seasons since 1985. The iconic No.3 finished his career on a high note by becoming the leading scorer in his 2014 NCAA campaign.

The fans of Creighton stand divided on their act of generosity towards McDermott. Nonetheless, there is no denying that Doug was one of their most talented athletes to step onto the court. Also, he has carved a reputation for himself in the NBA as well. Come what may, fans will always be excited to see Doug McDermott in action.
