Being the toughest conference in college basketball, SEC play is always in the spotlight. But recently, the chatter hasn’t just been about nail-biting games or star players. It’s also about, well, fouls. Specifically, a lot of fouls. The Kentucky-Alabama clash at Rupp Arena was a prime example, with the Wildcats falling 102-97. And Kentucky’s head coach Mark Pope’s post-game comments may have hinted at a deeper, systemic issue in officiating.

To break it down, Kentucky’s foul averages were relatively tame before entering conference play in 2025, sitting at 16.1 fouls per game for themselves and 17.1 for their opponents. But once SEC play began those numbers shot up to 22.0 and 20.0 respectively. That’s a massive jump, and Pope didn’t shy away from addressing it.

“We’ve been actually really good until league play. And league play has gotten complicated for us,” Pope admitted after Kentucky’s loss. However, he has been on a mission to figure out how officiating works in the SEC. He’s gone so far as to attend referee symposiums, trying to understand how calls are made.

“The calls are really hard,” he said. But his interest doesn’t stop there. After a tough loss to Georgia earlier this month, Pope spoke about wanting to “learn the whistle” after what he called a “massive education on the whistle.” He’s not concerned with what the rules should be; he’s focused on what’s actually being enforced.

Meanwhile, journalist Tristan Pharis noted on Twitter, “Mark Pope emphasizes that they are looking at fouls analytically and have found ‘consistency’ in what is being called, which may not match the rulebook.” So, are these discrepancies signs of a larger issue? Rulebook violations?

Whatever the case, for now, essentially, Pope understands that arguing with officials won’t change the outcome. Instead, his team is adapting to how games are being officiated. And they’re doing so with precision. With foul trouble becoming a recurring issue, Pope and his staff have made it a top priority.

They’ve gone back and categorized every foul called on Kentucky over the past five games, analyzing patterns to find consistency, even if that consistency doesn’t align with the rulebook. “We’re spending an insane amount of time right now on fouls,” the coach revealed during his call-in show.

Now, Pope and his crew have learned, but the coach isn’t sharing the specifics publicly. “I am not going to talk about those publicly,” he said. But he added, “It’s given us some real direction, a chance to drastically improve.” With Kentucky’s next game against Vanderbilt, we’ll see how much these adjustments translate.

Despite fouls, Mark Pope’s cool head leads the way

One of the most impressive things about Pope this season has to be his ability to stay calm. He hasn’t been called for a single technical foul—a stark contrast to last year, where he’d occasionally pick up a T or two.

“Sometimes I lose my mind,” Pope admitted. “But for me, I want our players to feel the same way I do—that the referees actually have no power over whether we win or lose the game.” Even when Kentucky found themselves on the wrong end of a season-high 25 fouls in their loss to Georgia, Pope stayed composed.

The one time he came close to losing his cool was their game against Texas A&M. After a borderline foul call against Amari Williams, the crowd erupted. Pope, visibly frustrated, shook his head and muttered, “Oh my gosh!” But even then, he didn’t let it escalate. Kentucky now stands at 3-2 in the conference. But rather than fixating on officiating, the coach is busy finding solutions.

As for the officiating, the discrepancies do raise eyebrows, but until more dots connect, it’s all speculation. For now, Pope and the Wildcats are focused on one thing: winning. And with their blueprint in place, they’re poised to tackle whatever comes their way.
