The Kansas Jayhawks are a train wreck right now. Fans are left scratching their heads and wondering what Bill Self’s team is doing. The thirty-four point loss to BYU summed up how the season has gone for Kansas. Their star players aren’t scoring, and they’re making a lot of mistakes on the defensive end. Analysts are worried, and rightfully so!
Bill Self’s team was expected to be a top-5 team in the nation before the season started. However, they let expectations down in their very first conference game against West Virginia, losing by one point. Now, they stand sixth in the Big 12 conference, looking to make a comeback.
On The Mark Titus Show, the show host talked about the Hunter Dickinson-led team and their woes. “I know they have some decent wins in the year.” Titus said, pointing out that they won against Houston and Duke, top-seeded teams in the country. Kansas, irrespective of the upsets that they have had, is going to make the NCAA tournament.

However, Mark Titus dropped an absolute bombshell. “I don’t think Kansas fans want them in the tournament.” He said, holding nothing back against the Jayhawks. “This has gotta be the most frustrating, f–k-this-team experience Kansas fans my age probably ever had.” He went on to talk about how Hunter Dickinson’s team was not the worst Kansas team of all time, but the worst one that fans had expectations from.
After two back-to-back blowout losses, Mark Titus might not be wrong in his assessment! According to analysts, it is time for Kansas to move on from their veterans and bring in fresh talent. However good their team may be on paper, the pieces do not fit together. There is no synergy, and the unit is not cohesive.
Bill Self’s veterans exposed in BYU matchup
Kansas, objectively, is not a young team. Their core is built around veterans like Hunter Dickinson, Zeke Mayo, and Dajuan Harris Jr. However, the experience that these players bring to the side was outweighed by BYU’s sheer offensive dominance.
After losing 91-57, the Jayhawks didn’t have a lot to show in terms of offensive or defensive prowess. Their top-scorer was Hunter Dickinson, who put up an inefficient 12 points and 14 boards. The only other person who reached double figures, however, was senior point guard David Coit.

Seniors Zeke Mayo, Dajuan Harris Jr., and KJ Adams Jr. for a miserly 12 points. Harris had a particularly off day as he scored only 2 points in 31 minutes of action. Their veteran experience and past showings were all for moot in this particular match-up.
It wasn’t a pretty showing for the Jayhawks, and it left analysts concerned. Some of them even suggested a clean slate for Bill Self and his team from next season. With the way that Kansas played, they would be hard-pressed to get past the first round of the national tournament.

Coach Self will definitely need to regroup with his squad and figure out a way to get some synergy going. There is no doubt that Kansas is a very talented team, they just need to figure out how to make it click. What do you think? Will the Jayhawks manage to get it together in March? Can they make a deep playoff run? Only time will tell.
