The UConn college basketball program has every chance to script history. After the legendary UCLA unit of the late 60’s, they can become only the second to accomplish a three-peat in the men’s division of college basketball. More so now, with head coach Dan Hurley brushing aside a mammoth $70 million move to the LA Lakers.
The decision to stay loyal to UConn and to chase a rare NCAA glory is receiving its fair share of admiration. Not only fans, but Hurley’s contemporaries are also heaping praises on his attitude. The most recent one to extend his acknowledgment is the 2021 NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, Mike Dunlap.
However, he opines that the 51-year-old is not solely responsible for his commitment to UConn. In an X post, he conveys, “Dan Hurley. Father. Brother. Basketball royalty. Fine. Unseen & basically voiceless in public but oh so vital to all success-mother. Christine Hurley. Mothers so important yet mostly go unrecognized. Here is a toast to all the mothers & wives of coaches, unsung heroes.”

Hurley is currently associated with the Huskies through a six-year, $32m contract. Anyhow, the Lakers attempted to lure him through $70 million over the same period. This was after they had fired Darvin Ham in May after his two years of service. Now, ESPN analyst JJ Reddick, and former Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego are under consideration for the job.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Naismith Coach of the Year hinted at his possible reason to stay at UConn a little while ago.
What could be the reason behind Dan Hurley retaining his position at UConn?
Dan Hurley reflected on his special bond with the basketball program in April during the NCAA tournament. One of the many things he was glad about is how the environment has helped him to build a championship culture with the Huskies.
He went on, “The resources that the University of Connecticut and programs now invest in these players is not for their attendance. It’s not just to be on campus. It’s to produce and to produce winning. We go hard for these guys while they’re on campus, and that’s why, I think, you see the bond the way it is.”
