No one in the basketball world will be a stranger to the name Lisa Bluder. The outstanding coach of the Hawkeyes has given 24 years of her life to the University of Iowa’s women basketball program. She has built it brick-by-brick and has received results as well. However, the devotion of coaches leading to their absence as a part of a family is an ongoing issue for every mentor. Nevertheless, Bluder has defied that reality with her husband supporting her through every season.

The union of four decades has gone through a lot, A LOT! But David Bluder has been the rock to Lisa through it all. And so has she. Let us look at the uphill life path and struggles that David and Lisa shared as partners.

David Bluder’s unconscious state

Apparently, Mr. Bluder met with a scary accident that sent him into a 3-day-long coma. Recapping back to 1997, 13 years after their marriage, David was returning home from the country after watching the Hale Bop Comet. On the way, a young driver crashed into his car sending him flying out through the windshield into a nearby ditch. When David’s parents got there, they found him unconscious. Nevertheless, they took him to a hospital where he was admitted as an unconscious person.

Lisa Bluder, who was in Cincinnati to accept her MVC Tournament title, flew back home to meet her husband. The hopeful family was blessed with a second chance as David finally woke up from a three-day-long coma. However, he also had an awakening that changed this finance guy’s perspective on life. He left his job and became a full-time parent to their three kids while Lisa Bluder had an active profession as a basketball coach.

However, this is not the only thing David did in his free time.

David Bluder’s Great Gamble

While David’s mother takes the credit for being the cupid between the two and mentioning a Lisa Geske to his son, their meeting may have another source too. The two met back in 1983 while enrolling in their respective programs at the Northern Iowa University. David Bluder was signing up for his bachelor’s degree. The man who has had a multifaceted career started it all with finance.

He works at his parent’s restaurant Country Kitchen in Marion, is an investor, a businessman, a banker, and a former instructor of business policies at the University of Iowa. He is a full-time father to three kids– Hannah, Emma, and David Bluder Jr. and a husband who visits every game that Lisa ever goes to with her Hawkeyes. But one profession that stands out in this list is a published author.

Standing at a net worth of $500,000 USD, David Bluder published a book called ‘The Great Gamble: At What Price’ in 2020. It was published after 10 years of hard work only to be released on 17 March 2020, right before the NCAA pressed the pause button on March Madness. Even though the pandemic hit the release, it only made the book popular during the COVID-19. Lisa Bluder also shared the release of her husband’s book with her Instagram followers.

The Great Gamble narrates the story of male protagonist and a baller at Iowa — Jason Carson. The fictitious novel is a work of art that encapsulates everything from sacrifice and morality to family and loyalty. However, this is certainly not the end of David’s epic escapades. According to an exclusive by The Athletic, David may have revealed that he will be releasing another book related to Cryptocurrency and other scientific ongoings in the world.

While we do not have the specifics of if and when that book will come out, we certainly know where we can always find David Bluder.

Lisa Bluder and David’s ‘Bluder Bunch’

Lisa Bluder and her husband have a family of five, with three grown-up kids. While Lisa continues to be the winningest coach in the Big 10, David is out with his kids or writing his next fiction. Their oldest daughter — Hannah Bluder — is actively involved with Iowa University as the Director of Operations. Working closely to her mother, Hannah always had an inclination toward sports. In fact, she has played football and basketball as a collegiate. However, she has admitted that she never wanted her mother to be her coach.

Their second daughter Emma is not a part of the sports world. Contrasting to her siblings, she went into the fashion world and paved her own path. Lisa Bluder and David’s youngest, David Bluder Jr., is a baller at Grinnell College. He is also excellent at academics, making him an all-round student.

Lisa Bluder along with her Hawkeyes have seen skyrocketing attention in the public sphere. Especially, as the top favorites of the 2024 March Madness. Whether they win or not, Bluder has given women’s college basketball a special player like Caitlin Clark. Hence, scripted her legacy in the record books for a much longer time.
