In her two-decade long broadcasting experience, Robin Roberts became the only woman co-anchor on “Good Morning America” in 2005. During her time at GMA, the show won three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Morning Program. But before becoming the celebrated morning show host, Robin Roberts was a feted college basketball star.

Roberts’ accomplishments have had a significant impact on women’s basketball. She was one of six women inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. She was a member of the Lady Lions basketball team at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. At graduation, she was one of only three players on the team with 1,000 career points and 1,000 lifetime rebounds.

Despite receiving a basketball scholarship, Roberts dismissed Louisiana State University as too impersonal. She was told that by the time she graduated, a journalism scholarship would be available, but the only award offered was a tennis scholarship.

She continued to excel as a player for the women’s basketball team, finishing her career as the third-highest scorer with 1,446 points in school history. Just three Lady Lions have amassed 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their careers, including Roberts. She scored a career-high 27.6 points per game in her last season. Her number 21 jersey was retired at a ceremony held by Southeastern on February 5, 2011.

A successful career as a sportscaster

Roberts began her television career in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, covering sports. Since then, she has earned several honors for her exceptional coverage of important stories. She received the “Nashville Scene” Sportscaster of the Year award in 1987. She began working for ESPN in 1990 and was honored with three Emmy Awards. She was the ESPN studio anchor of the NCAA Women’s Final Four from 1996 to 2002.

In 2007, Roberts shocked both her coworkers and admirers when she revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite adversity, Roberts maintained her dedication and optimism.
