The thrill and excitement of the NCAA continue to amaze basketball enthusiasts before heading toward Christmas. The 2023-24 edition has already treated its fans with so many memorable individual performances. Another example of a breathtaking exhibition was displayed by the charismatic No.1 of the Florida Atlantic Owls– Johnell Davis.
The 22-year-old secured a famous win for the Owls as they upset Arizona in a nail-biting contest. His spectacular 35 points and 9 rebounds handed the Owls their first-ever victory over a top-10 opponent. Following this, there has been a constant urge among college basketball fans to know more about him.

The 6 ft 4 in shooting guard of the Owls had quite a reputation before entering the realms of college basketball. Born in Big Sandy, Montana, Johnell Davis started his high school career playing for 21st Century Charter School in Gary, Indiana. He was instrumental in Charter School conquering four consecutive sectional titles. Moreover, Davis also managed to leave behind Eugene German’s single-game scoring record by landing 53 points in a match. In addition to this, the Post-Tribune and The Times of Northwest Indiana named him Player Of the Year for his outstanding performances as a senior. Apparently, he scored at an amazing average of 31.4 points and 9.8 rebounds to go with 4.6 steals and 2.6 assists per game. Soon after, he was scouted by the Florida Atlantic Owls to represent them in the Conference USA.
In his freshman campaign, Johnell had a rather dull season. He could only manage to score 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. As a sophomore he wasn’t able to make any significant contributions. Furthermore, he has to deal with multiple injuries. Things started to change for him after he was chosen to lead the team in his junior year. Consequently, he led Florida Atlantic to its best season in the program’s history. The Owls ended up with Conference USA regular season along with the tournament titles. As a result, he won the C-USA Sixth Player of the Year.
Also, in a game against FDU in the 2023 NCAA tournament, Davis scripted his name in the record books. He became the first player in the tournament’s history to score 25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals in a single game.

Johnell Davis’s impact so far
At present, Johnell Davis is the second-best performer in that Atlantic Owls locker room. He is currently averaging 14.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Additionally, he has a field goal percentage of 47.5 and an assist rate of 2.2 per game. Johnell has the second-best figures from the 3-point range with 48.8% accuracy. Also, he holds an impressive conversion rate of 77.8 from free throws.
The Florida Atlantic Owls have announced themselves as one of the contenders after their upset over the Wildcats. An emphatic performance by Davis proves that they have players who can step up and deliver for them against quality teams.
