Co-parenting is no easy feat, but La La and Carmelo Anthony have shown that, even after their 2021 divorce, their shared love for their son Kiyan makes everything work. Despite carving out individual paths, the duo has ensured Kiyan is supported. While the 17-year-old star is following in his father’s footsteps, he has maintained a rock-solid bond with his mom. For La La, Kiyan’s college choice brought an unexpected sense of relief. For fans, it might sound exciting because it’s Melo’s alma mater. However, his ex-wife must be happy because it’s close to home.
Just 280 miles away from New York, Syracuse offers a perfect balance, allowing La La to stay actively involved in Kiyan’s life. Compare that to Auburn or USC, which are thousands of miles away, and it’s easy to see why this decision brought her peace of mind. La La cherishes her close bond with Kiyan.
Her love for him goes far beyond basketball. In her own words, “Everyone talks so much about him as a basketball player and all his success… but I’m here to talk about him as a person.” She labeled him the most incredible human being that she knows. “He’s my best friend. He’s my everything. We hang out all the time. I love being with him. He’s just a genuine person who always likes looking out for other people,” she added.

This sentiment sums up La La’s ultimate wish for her son: to grow into a good person above all else. “He’s not going to be playing basketball forever,” she explained on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast. “I want him to just continue to be a standup, amazing person because that’s going to take him through life.”
It’s advice rooted in love and a reminder that, while success on the court is great, it’s character that truly matters. Their bond has always been like that- grounded and pure. While La La never gets tired of appreciating her son, he feels the same way. Just take his recent tattoo—a heartfelt tribute to his mom.
The ink features an image of La La, proving how much she means to him. It’s no surprise Kiyan listens closely to her advice, as he admitted on Angel Reese’s podcast, Unapologetically Angel, “If she tells me something, I listen because she’s been through it all.” Speaking of Angel’s podcast, Kiyan got some hilarious yet serious advice from his ‘big sis’ as well as he steps into a bigger spotlight.

“Make guests leave their phones at the door,” she suggested, emphasizing privacy. Reese also advised Kiyan to keep his circle small and consider non-disclosure agreements for visitors. Melo’s son admitted that both of his parents give him similar advice, especially when it comes to relationships.
