Years ago, a teenager in Senegal was streaming March Madness in the middle of the night, learning the sport, and understanding the plays. Fastrack to 2025, the boy had become an integral part of one of the top programs in the nation– Duke. It’s been nothing short of exceptional how Khaman Maluach made his way onto the hardwood and became one of the top prospects for the NBA. “I was watching that game, but I didn’t know that it was Duke and UNC playing,” Maluach told Hoops HQ. “We didn’t know the teams and stuff like that.”
Hailing from South Sudan, Maluach didn’t have an easy path before taking up basketball. An admission to the NBA academy and the impact of ballers like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, and Kevin Durant inspired him to take the sport seriously. It was on YouTube that he initially started learning the game. But only under professional trainers’ watch did he fine-tune his technique and gameplay.
Now, from shining in the BAL (Basketball Africa League) to representing South Sudan in the 2024 Paris Olympics and FIBA World Cup 2023 – Maluach has been a consistent performer and towering presence on the court. Recalling the time in Uganda, Maluach once said, “We didn’t have many facilities. We had one (court) for three or four areas. I wasn’t exposed to the game.”

Which high school did Khaman Maluach attend?
Khaman Maluach’s journey would fit perfectly for a Hollywood movie script. The tall teenager, along with his brothers and mother, fled from South Sudan and settled in Uganda during a time of war. In January 2020, Maluach caught the eye of local basketball coach Akech Wuoi Garang – who was part of NBA Academy Africa’s vast network of scouts on the continent. Then 13-year-old Maluach had been away from school for 2 years because of high tuition fees. Wuoi Garang’s connections helped him enroll in nearby Bethel Covenant for free and also join the school’s basketball team. Citing academic benefits, Maluach took the opportunity that changed his life.
At 14, Maluach then made history as the youngest player ever to join an NBA Academy. Excelling in every department–from scoring, 3-point shooting, rebounding and blocking Maluach quickly rose to the ranks of a five-star prospect.
