JuJu Watkins made a stunning debut in the NCAA, turning heads in her freshman season by breaking USC legend Cheryl Miller’s long-standing single-season scoring record, which had held strong since 1986. Since then, Watkins has become a rising star in the college basketball world, with many predicting a bright future for her. But here’s something you might not know: Watkins has a quirky secret that fuels the confidence she brings to her on-court performances.
JuJu Watkins recently made an appearance on Flau’jae Johnson’s podcast, where she opened up about her journey and unique sense of style. One of the more interesting moments came when the discussion turned to Watkins’ signature high bun hairstyle. “I think for me it’s [hairstyle] like a Superstition thing, and like bun gives me confidence honestly. You know, you look good, you play good,” stated the USC Trojans star on Best of Both Worlds.
Watkins’ hair bun has been a ritual for her since she was five, and she never misses wearing that while stepping on the court. Her consistent style has even inspired countless young girls, who now mimic her look and see her as a role model both on and off the court. She mentioned, “I think I hope that, you know, the little girls doing that and playing—I feel like I hope that gives them the same kind of feeling—just that confidence. So for me it gives me that.”

If Watkins believes her signature bun boosts her confidence, it’s certainly working. The 19-year-old guard had an incredible freshman year with the USC Trojans, averaging 27.2 points per game. Her standout performance has earned her the prestigious WNBCA Freshman of the Year honor, solidifying her status as one of college basketball’s rising stars. This is the first time Watkins has revealed a reason behind her bun, as previously, she only gave nights and suggestions.
JuJu Watkins’ suggestion to another NBA star about her hairstyle
Earlier, JuJu Watkins had an engaging chat with NBA star Paul George, who praised her signature high bun and suggested it might set a new trend among the younger generation. However, the USC guard responded with what was a playful and sarcastic remark, adding a lighthearted twist to the compliment. “Men can wear buns too the bun can be ‘handsome and cute. It’s co-ed,” said Watkins.
That iconic high bun has not only made waves on the court but has also landed her a spot in an AT&T commercial alongside NBA star Joel Embiid. “I don’t know, just creating like a new kind of swag. It’s cool,” Watkins shared, clearly proud of how her hairstyle is becoming a fashion statement.
Beyond her standout hairstyle and fashion flair, JuJu Watkins is making waves in the NIL landscape. She’s secured one of the most substantial NIL deals in women’s collegiate basketball and ranks 12th on On3’s list of NIL deal values. From shattering records to inspiring young athletes with her signature high bun, Watkins’ impact extends beyond the court, marking her as a trailblazer in women’s college basketball.
