The University of Southern California Trojans trumped the Stanford Cardinal in an on-road game on Friday. While the Cardinal could only pot 58 points, the Trojans scored 67. Out of these 67, 51 points were smashed by the Trojans guard JuJu Watkins. This exemplary performance grabbed a lot of eyeballs since the entire team rested on Watkins in this game. The next best in the Trojans’ lineup was 12 points from guard McKenzie Forbes.
Taking cognizance of the spectacular performance, a commentator after the game reminded Watkins that hers was the best performance by an NCAA D1 player this season. And Watkins with her reply just gave a glimpse of how grounded she is.

On being told of her astounding feat, Watkins in a confident tone mentioned that, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! More to come. More to come. For sure.” The commentator then went ahead and quipped, “Caitlin Clark? Who?” To which Watkins gave a humble reply, “No, don’t do that. Don’t do that. Don’t do that. Much respect there,” before breaking into a chuckle.
As the Iowa Hawkeyes’ gun player, Clark is known to smoke a lot of 40-pointer games. In this season itself, she touched the 40-point mark thrice, the highest being 45 against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The other two 40-pointer games came against the Michigan State Spartans when she thrashed an exact 40 and against the Virginia Tech Hokies when she basketed 44. Overall, Clark averages 32.1 points per game. And Watkins is not far behind.
Watkins averages 25.8 points per match and is the contender for Clark’s major national player of the year award. Freshman Watkins had her previous best of 35 points against the Le Moyne Dolphins.

Watkins has undoubtedly established herself as a competitor to Clark. And when you’ve such a mighty scorer, the other players simply pale in comparision.
