A 6-2 run and a 2-game winning streak. Sure the Duke Blue Devils have made a mark this season by giving an upset to the number 2 ranked Auburn Tigers. But despite their win, there are still questions surrounding Jon Scheyer’s brilliance, since they have already lost 2 games previously this season, and analysts are not sure of their consistency.
On Wednesday’s episode of The Field Of 68: After Dark, Rob Dauster shared his on Duke’s win and raised an important point when everyone else was busy celebrating their unexpected win.
“The issue with Duke is not been whether or not they are good enough to win these games, right? They were a possession away beating Kentucky on a neutral court like Kentucky is the number fourth-ranked team in the country right? They were a possession away from beating Kansas on a neutral court. Kansas at this time is the number one team in the country,” Dauster stated.

The two games that the Blue Devils lost were against Kentucky (4) and Kansas (1). In both these games, Duke lost by a narrow margin of mere one possession. Against Kentucky, they lost 77-72 whereas against Kansas, they ended on the losing side by a 75-72 difference. Therefore, the games could have ended differently if there was one more possession. However, that does not eclipse the main question.
“We know Duke is good enough to hang in there and be in these games, the question is can they do it at winning time? And the one thing I think was good for them tonight is that they made their big shots before the final possession of the game. Like the Tyrese Proctor three that he hit to beat that shot clock buzzer…,” Dauster added.
The problem according to Dauster is if they will be able to stay consistent and make the money shots when they really matter. However, that does not mean they did not have positives in the game. Dauster was particularly impressed by Tyrese Proctor’s game who made a three with 4:20 seconds left, taking the Blue Devils’ score to 73-68. Dauster then foreshadowed that it was “going to end up being the Duke’s night.” Plus the analyst did appreciate the other stars of the night.
Rob Dauster looks happy with Duke’s overall performance
While Dauster did put doubts over Duke’s consistency, he was happy that the team contributed as a whole to this win. The leading scorer for the Blue Devils was Cooper Flagg who hit 22 points. Similarly, Sion James scored 9 points with 3 crucial free throws. Plus he also performed a steal on Johni Broome with 9:42 seconds left.

For his dunks, Dauster also compared him to Caleb Foster. “He played like he brings difficult level of link and toughness and physicality that Caleb Foster does…” Meanwhile, Dauster also lauded Isaiah Evans and Maliq Brown.
“I thought Sion James was incredible tonight. Cooper Flagg made a lot of really big plays. Obviously Isaiah Evans with the threes that he made. Madder. I thought Maliq Brown’s defense and his ability to be kind of like switchable and take up more space when you were playing in those ball screens a little bit how Miles Kelly watched it. I thought he was good,” Dauster concluded.
While Evans scored the team’s second-highest 18 points, with 6 threes, Brown collected 6 boards. All this helped the Blue Devils win the game and upset the Tigers. Hopefully, Scheyer will continue to boost the morale of his team, and perhaps they will accomplish their dreams of bagging their first NCAA title under him.
