Auburn men’s basketball has been a force to reckon with this season, flexing their dominance winning the Maui Invitational tournament. Ranked No. 2 in the nation, they’ve been taking down top teams with little effort and last Tuesday night was no different. Bruce Pearl’s squad extended their winning streak in style, cruising past Georgia State with a commanding 100-59 victory. However, not everything went as smoothly as the Tigers might have hoped.
The game took an unexpected turn when star big man Johni Broome exited after just two minutes on the court due to a shoulder injury. His absence cast a shadow over the otherwise dominant performance, leaving fans and teammates concerned.“His right shoulder came out and went right back in. He did it a year ago, so he’s familiar with it,” Coach Bruce Pearl shared after the game. “We’ll evaluate him tomorrow and let you know more. Hopefully, he’ll be OK.”

The news sent waves of worry. Fortunately, though, the Tigers got some much-needed update: Broome’s injury won’t require surgery.
“Auburn big man Johni Broome’s shoulder injury is not considered serious, source told @TheFieldOf68,” an update from analyst and co-founder of Field of 68, Jeff Goodman, read. That’s a huge relief, considering the senior forward has been one of the top players in college basketball this season. Averaging a double-double with 18.1 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, Broome has been a dominant force in the paint. But his impact goes beyond just scoring and rebounding.

No surgery needed. Likely a day to day thing, but could miss a little time.

Broome also averages 2.7 blocks per game, leading the SEC in that category, and the team in scoring, rebounds, and assists (3.5). Auburn, often overshadowed by teams like Alabama and Kentucky, faces a tough road ahead, but losing Broome temporarily creates challenges on both offense and defense.
Despite facing adversity, Auburn gears up for thrilling showdowns ahead.
Offensively, Auburn has thrived, ranking sixth nationally with 88.5 points per game. Broome’s presence in the low post provides critical spacing for their shooters. Without him, the Tigers could face a stiffer challenge, especially with their next matchup against No. 16 Purdue, a team known for its size and physicality.
Interestingly, Purdue has its own injury concerns, as their big man, Daniel Jacobsen, has also been sidelined. This might even the playing field a bit. Meanwhile, Auburn still boasts a well-rounded roster. Five players average over 10 points per game, and Chad Baker-Mazara leads the SEC with an incredible 93.5% free-throw shooting percentage. Additionally, two of Auburn’s guards, Miles Kelly and Tahaad Pettiford, have been lighting it up from beyond the arc, each averaging more than five three-point attempts per game.
While Broome’s absence will be felt, especially his physicality and shot-blocking presence, this Auburn team has shown resilience. They’ll rely on their depth and adaptability to step up in his absence. For now, Broome is set to miss Auburn’s final two non-conference games against Purdue and Monmouth. The hope is that he’ll be back in action before conference play begins, giving the Tigers their enforcer back just as the season heats up.
With or without Broome, Auburn’s season continues to look promising, and fans are eager to see how the Tigers handle these challenges moving forward.
