Following the farewell of Mike Krzyzewski aka Coach K from the college basketball circuit, his protege Jon Scheyer is living by his conviction. But since conviction comes with cost, how much due is the Duke head coach getting for marshaling the young and restive troops? After all, disciplining Blue Devils is not a cakewalk.

Scheyer made it to the Duke’s staff list in the role of a special assistant post the resignation of assistant coach Chris Collins in 2014. He was then promoted to the role of a full assistant coach in April that year after Steve Wojciechowski departed. Scheyer’s future could easily be ascertained when he served as the acting head coach of the Duke when Coach K was quarantined due to COVID-19 in January 2021.

The 36-year-old had previously plied his trade as a basketball player for the Duke and then came back to coach the college team around 2014. The college had announced a six-year renewed contract extension in October, lasting through 2028-29 season.

“I’m committed to Duke,” Scheyer said. “To know that they’re committed to me as well and our staff — and the job they’ve done — is great.”

Scheyer propelled Duke to having back to back no.1 recruiting classes under him. The Illinois-born is the only person to win the ACC tournament in  both roles – firstly a player and then a coach.

The All-American guard spent nearly eight seasons under Krzyzewski in the capacity of an assistant before being promoted to the position of a head coach.  The 2010 NCAA Champion also served as an associate head coach from 2018 onwards.
