The signs were evident from the season’s opening SEC game. No. 1 Tennessee crushed Arkansas, 76-52, in Knoxville, which was an early sign that Arkansas was in for a rough season. Ominously, the Razorbacks followed that loss with back-to-back home defeats against ranked opponents Ole Miss and Florida. And any illusions of a bounce-back were crushed after Arkansas blew a 12-point first-half lead to LSU. Razorbacks fans are in panic after Arkansas falls to 0-4 in SEC play, raising questions about the program’s postseason chances under John Calipari.
The recurring theme? It’s a worrying trend of not being able to finish out games. Again and again, the Razorbacks have lost their momentum after good starts and choked in critical situations. Their game against LSU was no different as the team lost an 8-point lead in the second half. Also, this marked the third consecutive game Arkansas had built a lead of at least 9 points, only to see it evaporate before the final whistle.
In his post-game remarks, Calipari was candid about the team’s shortcomings. “I wish we had gotten the ball to Jonas more,” he admitted. “We talked about it; we went into huddles about if they’re open, throw it to him. But they were getting around the post, and I told him he needed to keep them behind him.” However, execution faltered, with players struggling to adapt to defensive adjustments.

Highlighting the struggles, Calipari pointed to the team’s 3-point shooting, “Both teams fought hard; we just need to finish off a game at some point. Again, they were nine for 20 from the three-point line, while we were eight for 22, but a bunch of those were at the end.” This season, the team has hit only 30.1% from beyond the arc. Which is a significant drop from previous years.
Arkansas’ shooting problems got worse because they couldn’t make use of the boards. It was clear that rebounding was a weakness in the loss to Tennessee. Where they were beaten 45–24 on the boards. In addition, the lack of physicality and focus on the boards have given opponents more possessions.
On the attack, the Razorbacks’ problems are just obvious. In their most recent game Arkansas managed to score only 30% from the floor and 19% from beyond the arc. The team has gone back to using isolation plays which basically stops the flow of the offense and scoring. These mistakes have caused late-game leads to turn into heartbreaking losses. And there is a stark contrast between their nonconference success and their SEC woes.

Arkansas was thriving before SEC play, going 11-2. Dominant wins over Oakland and #14 Michigan in the Jimmy V Classic had propelled them to a #16 national ranking. The step up in competition has exposed weaknesses, Calipari himself acknowledged. “This league is really good,” he noted. “You’re going to take knocks. It’s just how it is.”
If that’s not enough, the high expectations surrounding Calipari’s arrival have only added to the scrutiny. People expected Calipari, who has a history of winning championships, to boost the program. But the early struggles have put both him and his team under a spotlight.

Despite the challenges, Calipari remains steadfast in his belief in the Razorbacks’ potential. “I have a lot of faith in this group. I’m disappointed, but I’m not discouraged,” he said. The upcoming stretch of games will be make or break for the team, with a chance to regroup and save the season. With SEC play intensifying, the margin for error will be razor-thin.

For Arkansas fans, the hope is that Calipari’s acknowledgment of the team’s struggles is the first step toward addressing them. But something has to change, and fast, if the Razorbacks are to deliver on the early season promise they have shown. As the season unfolds, one question remains. Can John Calipari and his Arkansas Razorbacks rewrite their narrative, or will the haunting pattern continue to define their year? Or can they get back up?
