The UConn Huskies have one of the strongest rosters in the country and their road to the NCAA Championship Game is proof of that. Another thing the Huskies fans cannot get enough of is their head coach, Dan Hurley, who has a long past with basketball and a bright future with his son Andrew Robert Hurley. UConn’s walk-on star guard is the next in line of the Hurley legacy. Without further delay, let us dive into who this young talent is and what the father-son bond is like.

It is a challenge to continue a golden past and bring it justice in the present or the future. However, the No. 20 Husky is trying to balance everything on his shoulders. Born on January 30, 2002, in Glastonbury, Connecticut, the 6-ft-1 athlete is the younger son of Andrea and Dan Hurley. Andrew Hurley has chosen the path of his paternal legacy.

Andrew is the fourth member of the Hurley family to enter the basketball world. His father Dan Hurley is the current head coach for UConn. His uncle, Bob Hurley, is Arizona State’s HC. In addition to that generation, Andrew’s grandfather, Bob Hurley Sr., is also a Hall of Famer coach. He is the former coach of Anthony High School, Jersey City, NJ. To date, it is considered a powerhouse basketball program at the high school level.

Andrew Hurley completed his last two years of high school basketball career with East Catholic. The high school is in the most successful MBB program in Manchester, Connecticut. Although he did not contribute much as a junior, the school did bring in the DI State Championship title. As a senior, he led the team with a 23-1 record and a CCC conference title. On the other hand, their older son, Danny Hurley, chose a different path from his father and is presently the legislative aide in the Senate President Scutari. He also was a government aide in New Jersey and UConn’s athletics department. While he did not choose basketball to be his familial ally, he did graduate from Seton Hall, the school where Dan Hurley and Andrea met as students. The father-son UConn duo: Dan Hurley and Andrew Hurley

After completing his high school, Andrew committed to UConn as a freshman walk-on before the 2020-21 season even started. Although he was not given major time on the floor, he appeared in 15 games till his junior season. This year hasn’t been too different as he has played an average of 1.75 minutes in the first four rounds until Elite Eight. He helped the team with an assist against the Fighting Illini. The pass to Solomon Ball converted into a layup, bringing in the final 2 points for UConn.

Although he is a walk-on senior now, Dan Hurley is very proud of his son. While the son would describe Dan Hurley as “bizarre”, the father would respond with “He’s a chip off the old block. He’s just a mini me. Both my boys are.” According to him, he can make up for the time that he would not have been able to give his son due to his head coach position at various schools.
