Is John Scheyer better than Coach K?

The 1997 NCAA champion with Arizona, Josh Pastner, appeared on the popular podcast The Field Of 68: After Dark. He was evaluating the Dukes’ opening game victory over Dartmouth. Expressing his views on John’s recruiting this season, Josh said, “John Scheyer deserves a lot of credit. He hasn’t missed a beat. He’s actually recruited better than Mike Krzyzewski. Duke Basketball has recruited better in the last two years than they were even with Coach K as the head coach.”

The Blue Devils have recruited some of the best prospects in the class of 2024. Leading the pack is their top-ranked addition–Cooper Flagg. The 6-foot-8 forward is projected to be a top pick in the NBA Draft of 2025. In addition to this, the Dukes have also added the likes of Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson to their squad.

The discussion moved forward toward John Scheyer’s performance after carrying the baton forward for the Blue Devils. Pastner had some valuable inputs that he added to the conversation. He said, “There is a momentum for John Scheyer following Mike Krzyzewski. There is nothing wrong with that, but you still gotta go and get the guys. You’ve gotta connect with the players. You’re still running the program, not anybody can just do that. John Scheyer has found a way to create his niche, especially in recruiting.”
