The LSU Tigers won their 16th consecutive game Thursday night as they took down the Texas A&M Aggies 87-70 at home. However, head coach Kim Mulkey is not impressed with the team’s overall performance. While Mulkey’s Lady Tigers happen to be one of the best offensive teams in the NCAA, it is no surprise that their defense has let them down time and again.

Mulkey’s disappointment was clearly visible in the post-game interview as she discussed the grey areas that the team needs to address.

Soon after the game, Kim Mulkey joined the courtside commentators to discuss her thoughts on the outcome. Following this, they commended her for LSU producing 87 points against the number 1 defense in the SEC. To which she responded, “I’ve said it, I’ll keep saying it. We can score the ball. My irritation right now is we gave up 70. We’ve gotta quit giving up this many points or somebody that can score with us is going to beat us. I’m aggravated because we had a 23-point lead and I cleared the bench.”

Apparently, this was not the first time there was a defensive lapse on the court. In their previous game as well, they were unable to contain the Rebels attack and allowed them to score 73 points. Mulkey further added, “I’m gonna quit giving you those minutes. That was a 30-point game, and I subbed. I’m gonna hold them accountable.”

Seemingly, LSU’s vulnerability in their defense is somehow related to the lack of depth that their bench has.

Why is LSU conceding so much?

For the second game in a row, five of LSU’s starting players registered a double-digit score. There is no doubt that Mulkey’s starting line-up is an absolute powerhouse. However, issues for Mulkey arise the moment she starts substituting her players. The absence of Sa’myah Smith due to her injury has given a chance to players like Aalyah Del Rosario, Janae Kent, and Angelica Velez to step up and deliver.

Unfortunately, their lack of experience is costing LSU in the closing moments of the game. The only player who has been able to make an impact in defense coming off the bench is Last-Tear Poa.

Evidently, Kim Mulkey’s harsh criticism of her team’s performance is what makes her one of the best in the business. While we all see the Lady Tigers celebrate their third consecutive conference win, Mulkey puts on her coaching glasses and gives the team a reality check. Fans can only wait and see if LSU brings Mulkey’s words into action in their next clash against Auburn.
