The 2021 NIL law for college students changed the lives of NCAA athletes for good. They now not only earn according to their performances in their respective sports but also have enough to collect assets.  However, the latter part may not be true for many. One of the student-athletes who cannot exactly keep money in her bank is UConn’s Paige Bueckers. But she does have some good reasons.

Recently, the Huskies icon sat down with Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe on their A Touch More show. When the soccer legend asked Bueckers about her experience with the NIL world, the humble star responded with how she has to pinch herself. Talking about her dream coming true, Paige Bueckers added, “When I was little, I would go on these scammy websites, trying to find promo codes cheap stuff, probably fake. Just ’cause I was a little kid, I wanted everything and I didn’t have the money.”

Opening up about the present times, Paige Bueckers mentioned, “I get paid to do stuff that I dreamed of doing. It’s really crazy.”

Indeed, over her time in Storrs, the USBWA National Co-Freshman of the Year has garnered a lot of fame. Her NIL value going into the 2024-25 season stands at a whopping $1.4 million already. However, it is important to note that it is not only because of her basketball skills. In fact, she has similarly refreshed and unique taste when it comes to her style as well. Which, is becoming a problem for her financial advisor.

Paige Bueckers and her shaky relationship with money

Megan Rapinoe is quite a fashionista herself. Still, she loves how Paige Bueckers composes herself in the iconic style. Hence, the 39-year-old could not help but discuss how the Husky star approaches everything. Bueckers replied to her, “I just love fashion. I love putting pieces together. I would say a mix of feminine and masculine, just comfortable in what I wanna wear.”

However, Sue Bird had a completely different angle of approach. She talked about the money that Paige Bueckers is making. Talking about her latest splurge, the Husky guard said, “LA did me dirty. I was calling my financial advisor. I was warning him ‘Don’t worry. We have plans to make it back.’ Every time I spend, I’m like, ‘Hmm, how are we gonna get it back?”

The NIL store recently announced Paige Bueckers as their Top-Earning Female Athlete of the Year. But looks like none of that matters to her financial advisor as she still has to walk on eggshells when it comes to shopping. Nevertheless, she is on her way to begin the last NCAA chapter of her life and hopefully bring a National Championship to Storrs.
