Geno Auriemma raised his fists in the air, pumping them as the buzzer sounded at the Amalie Arena. It was a sign of dominance. The dominance that the UConn Huskies exerted in the final of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The side led by 10 points at halftime. Extended it to 20 at the end of the third quarter and then to 30 points mid-way into the final period. There was no stopping UConn’s relentless play and Auriemma had his sweet revenge.
Three seasons ago, Dawn Staley’s South Carolina team ended Auriemma’s 11-0 run in the National Championship Game. This time, it was Geno’s turn. His Huskies put an ‘L’ ahead of Staley’s 3-0 finals record, leaving her team no chance of a comeback in the game. Auriemma’s three stars – Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers- shined under the brightest lights, winning UConn’s 12th title in the process.
In all, it was a perfect start to Sarah Strong’s college career, playing a major role in the title run with four double-doubles. Azzi Fudd also got her flowers – her first title and MOP award. And a fitting farewell to WNBA-bound Paige. For Auriemma? A record-setting 12th title cemented his legacy as one of the best coaches at the college level.
