During Thursday night’s game, the No. 3-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes were tested by Loyola Chicago. The Ramblers, who had won four consecutive games, appeared to be evenly matched with the Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the first half. However, with only 1 minute and 46 seconds left in the first half, Ali Berg’s 3-pointer helped the Ramblers regain the lead after Loyola had fallen behind by seven points early in the second quarter. Nonetheless, Iowa managed to regain the lead just before halftime and went on to dominate the game, winning 98-69.

This was due to an outstanding performance by Caitlin Clark, who scored 35 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and made 10 assists, achieving a career triple-double. Clark was supported by the Hawkeyes’ other two top scorers, who also contributed significantly to the team’s victory.

Caitlin Clark, a senior guard hailing from Iowa, recently achieved her 13th career triple-double in a stunning display of skill and determination. During the game, Clark managed to sink 12 out of 21 field goals and 4 of 12 three-pointers, while also making a steal and a block. Clark’s performance was so impressive that it ranks among the four best games in Division I women’s basketball history, with only four other players having achieved three triple-doubles with at least 35 points.

Moreover, this feat marked Clark’s third triple-double with at least 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, making her only the second player in Division I women’s basketball history to achieve this level of performance. The only other player to do so was Cornelia Garden from LSU back in 1995. Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon holds the record for the most triple-doubles in Division I women’s basketball history, having achieved 26 between 2016 and 2020.

Clark’s impressive performance also helped her move up to the eighth position on the NCAA all-time scoring chart, with a total of 3,114 points. She surpassed the previous records of Rachel Banham of Minnesota, who scored 3,093 points from 2011–2016, and Jerica Coley of Florida International, who scored 3,107 points from 2010–2014, with her incredible effort on Thursday.

Will Caitlin Clark surpass her fellow Iowans?

Two other Iowans have scored over 3,000 points in their college basketball careers. Ashley Joens scored 3,060 points for Iowa State between 2018 and 2023, and Lorri Bauman scored 3,115 points for Drake between 1980 and 1984. Bauman, a Des Moines native, was a standout player at East High School, where she led the Scarlets to the 1979 state title and scored 3,010 career points.

Clark is currently very close to breaking Bauman’s record and becoming the top scorer in Iowa. Kelsey Plum of Washington has the NCAA record for the most points scored in a career, with 3,527 points earned between 2013 and 2017.
