The TCU provided an unexpected upset. No one had thought they’d beat such a top team. They looked in control and delivered when it mattered the most. While the Houston Cougars were capitalizing on chances in a closely contested match, it was the TCU’s gaming acumen and last-minute execution that helped them beat the No. 2 ranked team.
The final minutes before the buzzer will forever be etched in the memories of the TCU fans.
How did the TCU beat the Houston?

The TCU Horned Frogs were trailing by a 59-62 margin when their guard Micah Peavy basketed a layup. The score then read 61-62 with the TCU inching closer to their opponents. The Houston guard LJ Cryer passed off the three so that the team could pot a definitive two but missed it.
Next, there was a foul on the Houston guard Jamal Shead and the Horned Frogs center Ernest Udeh Jr. got a chance for free throws. Udeh Jr. missed both of them and still, the TCU lagged by one pointer. To the Horned Frogs’ delight, they got another foul on the Houston’s forward Emanuel Sharp.
Udeh Jr. however missed another free throw. If the disappointment wasn’t enough, the Houston increased their lead when Shead made a layup. The scoreboard now read 64-61 in favor of the Cougars. The Horned Frogs then scripted a comeback that stunned all.
Their guard Avery Anderson III made two free throws after a foul on the Cougars center J’Wan Roberts. Thus the TCU decreased their trail by a 63-64 stat. However, Shead in the very next offensive strategy dropped a three-pointer. This again increased the Cougars lead to 67-63. The TCU forward Trey Tennyson smashed a three-pointer jumper and the score was as close as 66-67 with 1:12 minutes left for the buzzer.
Roberts soon got a chance to extend the Houston’s lead after a foul on Peavy. In a surprising turn of events, Roberts missed the free throw. The scoreboard was still stranded at 67-66 with the Houston leading. Just when there were 6 seconds left, the TCU’s Miller made a layup assisted by Anderson III.

And with this, the TCU cruised to a surprising victory over the Houston by a narrow margin of 68-67. The buzzers were soon blown and the TCU athletes jumped with joy. The overall match saw a better effort in parts by the Houston albeit the TCU had won.

For the Horned Frogs, three players scored in double digits with Miller standing out for his team’s highest 13 points. Meanwhile, Tennyson and Anderson III weren’t far behind as they soused 12 and 11 points respectively. In terms of defense, Udeh Jr. was extraordinary, seizing 9 rebounds. It was a collective team effort that helped the TCU deliver an upset against the Cougars.
As for the Cougars, Roberts played the alpha for the team smoking 20 points with 13 rebounds. Thus he sozzled a double-double. Other than that their guard Damian Dunn notched up 17 points. The Houston performed exceptionally well but it wasn’t a collective team effort as some players inched ahead of their teammates by leaps and bounds.

Shead was another noteworthy player in the game as he thrashed 11 points. It was a last-minute thriller no one had expected. The TCU will next battle it out against the Cincinnati Bearcats and hopefully they’ll continue their winning run.
