Founded in 1860, Louisiana State University is one of the most prestigious institutions in America today. A revered establishment, the college is mostly known for its mechanical engineering background but boasts a strong sporting culture as well. Fielding 21 varsity teams, the athletics department in LSU is as good as they come, with many notable alumni spread across the professional sports leagues in America today. While LA Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal is arguably the greatest player to come out of LSU, the success that the establishment has found in basketball is relatively minimal.
With only one basketball national championship to their name the Tigers haven’t had the greatest run in the sport. But this all seems to have changed recently after their Women’s Basketball team earned their maiden National championship earlier this year. Coach Kim Mulkey who led the team to the title was recently honored with a new contract as the deal sees her become the highest paid college coach in the country.

After leading the LSU women’s basketball team to their first ever NCAA title, coach Kimberly Mulkey is set to sign a $32 million contract with the Tigers for a duration of 10 years. A significant rise compared to her initial $22.5 million contract, this deal will see her become the highest paid women’s basketball coach in the country.
The former Baylor head coach was previously thought to have earned an average sum of $2.5 million a year but the new deal surpasses that mark by a mile with the 61-year-old now set to earn $3.2 million per year. This deal also sees Mulkey surpass her fellow collegiate coaches in terms of earnings with UConn’s Geno Auriemma coming in at a close second with an annual salary of $2.9 million.
While the deal is set to make her the highest paid woman coach in the country, the celebrations will have to wait a bit as LSU Board of Supervisors are set to meet and vote on approving the contract by end of this week.
