In his recent social media post on X, NBA Star Gilbert Arenas talks about the ridiculous point of view that is being fashioned by modern parents while getting their child recruited as a student-athlete. Analyzing the state of college basketball recruiting with NIL, he says, “These schools are going after the parent. And obviously, the parent really don’t know shit about what’s going on, they don’t know the school, they don’t know the Division, they don’t know the sort of players on the team, they don’t know the style, how fast they play, they don’t know nothing. All they are saying is “Are you going to pay my kid? How much are you going to give me?”

Notably, the NIL policy was introduced in college basketball so that the student-athletes could profit from their brand. There are many factors involved in this. The emergence of NIL demolished the earlier rules preventing student-athletes from profiting off their likeness.

Secondly, preserving the integrity of the sports as the student-athletes should play for no more than the scholarship to attend a university. Moreover, NIL has provided the athletes with the ability to capitalize on their value and leverage the opportunities they have already earned.

Now, coming back to Gibert’s observation, he elaborates on how this thing seems to be turning sideways. He says, “You give them money, now that kid goes to school, that kid is going to know nothing about the school. All these parents are chasing money and not doing their research.”

Addressing the parents regarding the issue he says, “Do your research on the school. Make sure the school fits your child, the talent, the way they play, do they have room.”

“If you’re a freshman coming in, the person that’s in front of you, what you are then? If they are a sophomore and you’re good, GOOD LUCK! you going to be transferring, right if there is a senior coming in, you have a chance to make that spot. If it is a junior, and you’re a freshman that’s a senior, you probably get to learn a little bit. You have the team for. There’s more than just looking at a f…… name!” he adds.

With that being said, NIL does have some disadvantages too.

Is NIL having a bad influence?

Although, the policy has proved to be beneficial in several ways, however, it does have many potential disadvantages too. First of all, these deals can possibly create unfair advantages and breed egotism among athletes. As a result, they end up overshadowing their counterparts eventually developing an uneven playing field.

Next is the overwhelming task of balancing academics, sports, and marketing commitments/ responsibilities borne by an athlete. The money becoming a major factor in the equation does raise concerns about influencing the athletes over college athletics.
