This year’s ACC had one massive story developing. And that was how their regular season champions Virginia Tech spanned out their campaign. While many believe that their inspirational run can be credited to their senior center Elizabeth Kitley, there was another impactful player in their roster whose contributions paved the way for an Olympic call. The Australian juggernaut Georgia Amoore.
The 5 ft 6 in point guard proved her worth by emerging as the assist master for the Hokies this season. However, this may not come as a huge surprise for those who have been following her game for quite a while now. What may astonish some is that basketball was not the only sport she could excel.
How did the basketball affair start for Georgia Amoore?

Growing up in Ballarat, Victoria, the now 23-year-old grew an interest in a range of athletic activities. Seemingly, she made quite a reputation for herself terrorizing boys on a football turf. It wasn’t until she reached the age of 5 when she saw her cousin Keeley Frawley play at the Ballarat’s Minerdome that she was intrigued about the sport. By the time she reached 17, Amoore developed her skills to the extent that she represented Victoria Country at the youth level.
Following this, the year 2019 saw her inaugural participation in the NBL1 as a part of her hometown franchise Ballarat Rush. An exemplary display that accounted for an average of 11.2 points to go along with 3.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game which opened the gates for the guard to the locker rooms of Virginia Tech. And, that proved to be a turning point in her life as it provided her a valid platform for global recognition.

Amoore as a Hokie
The opening season saw her take per in 25 games. In an average of 31.5 minutes on the hardwood, she managed to score a total of 295 points while maintaining an average of 11.8 points per contest. The other impressive offensive quality was her distributing aptitude and accuracy from beyond the arc. As it turns out, she went past the 100 mark in assists and connected 39.9% of her long-range attempts. This earned her a place in the ACC All-Freshman Team. The story was more or less the same in her subsequent season as there were no significant changes in her numbers.

Anyhow, things started to take a transformational turn for Georgia Amoore in her junior year. The Hokies had the best season in their history as they made their way to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999. But, that wasn’t the end of their journey. A season-high 29 points from Amoore against Tennessee helped Virginia Tech enter their first-ever Regional Finals.

On top of that, she was adjudged the most outstanding player of the Seattle 3. Sadly, despite overcoming the record for most three-pointers in a single NCAA tournament, Amoore made her exit from the tournament through a Final Four defeat against LSU. Still, the 2023 ACC tournament MVP capped off her campaign averaging 16.3 points, 4.9 assists, and 3 rebounds per game. Moreover, she was only second to Caitlin Clark in the NCAA Division I in terms of three-pointers made. After this, Georgia Amoore planned to imitate something similar heading into her senior season.
The legacy that Georgia Amoore left at Virginia Tech
The final season with the Hokies had its own share of glory for Georgia Amoore. She picked up things where she left as a junior and led the program to its first-ever ACC regular season championships. Throughout the season, she made her presence felt by delivering her best numbers as a college basketball player. Evidently, her 32 games produced a stellar average of 18.8 points per game while being 41.2% efficient from the field and carrying a precision of 33.5% from the three-point range. In addition to this, she ended her tenure with the Hokies by becoming their all-time assist leader.
After this, Georgia Amoore decided to hang her boots as a representative of the Tech. This came immediately after head coach Kenny Brooks departed ways with the program. Nonetheless, her reunion with Brooks was on the cards soon enough when she decided to enter the transfer portal after he joined Kentucky. To no one’s surprise, she decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal and was scouted by the Wildcats in April this year.

There is no denying that Georgia Amoore will be one of the players to watch out for in the upcoming Paris spectacle. With such a decorated collegiate career, it will indeed be a challenge for her opponents to devise a viable strategy to contain her. It will be interesting for the fans to witness how this dynamic point guard impacts Australia’s campaign in the Olympics.
