At Maples Pavilion, Stanford (9-1) defeated a diligent Portland (6-6) 81-51. With this victory, the Cardinals recovered from losing to Gonzaga on the road, which lost them six spots in the Associated Press poll. With a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter, Stanford looked certain to win by a wide margin. Senior forward Cameron Brink, who was sick throughout most of Gonzaga’s game, scored the game’s opening four points. The Cardinals had a dominating 28-9 lead after ten minutes of play, with five players making baskets.
Unfazed by the 19-point deficit entering the second half, Portland increased their offensive and defensive intensity, defeating Stanford 16-8 in the quarter. However, this did not improve the situation, and a regrettable injury to a 19-year-old Portland rookie severely reduced the team’s chances of victory.

Graduate transfer guard Kennedy Dickie’s driving layup gave the Pilots the lead early in the second half, but junior guard Elena Bosgana of Stanford immediately answered with four points of her own. Brink also scored six baskets in a row to give her squad a 15-point lead.
Still, Portland did not give up. But Hannah Jump’s three-pointer at 4:09 changed the tide of the game. As Hannah tried to score, she made an unexpected contact with the 19-year-old freshman, Dyani Ananiev, which made her curl up in pain.
There were no fouls called, and that eventually led the head coach to take up the charge. The Portland coach’s technical call made the pilots’ situation worse at 2:43 in the third quarter, as he couldn’t tolerate seeing one of his finest players, who was extremely important at the moment, in agony.
In the third quarter, Stanford’s offense improved to 7-of-14 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The Cardinals were ahead 61–38 with one session remaining. In the last ten minutes, Portland’s situation didn’t get any better. With the second quarter solidly behind them, Stanford produced a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the visiting team 20–13 to secure a 30-point victory margin.
