The Ole Miss women’s basketball team lately made history with their remarkable 80-75 victory over Tennessee at the SJB Pavilion. This win was particularly significant as it marked Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s first triumph over the Lady Vols since she arrived in Oxford for the 2018-19 season. But the coach wasn’t happy with the remarkable feat, as she voiced a bold message to her crowd.
Women’s sports these days are getting the recognition they deserve, and the fandom of women’s sports is rising. But yet, there are few instances where one’s community fails to recognize the talent, as McPhee-McCuin boldly sends a voice message to her Oxford community.

Yolett McPhee, the coach of the Ole Miss Rebels women’s basketball team, recently made headlines by calling out the lack of support from the Oxford community towards women’s sports, comparing it to the overwhelming support received by men’s sports teams at Ole Miss.
“What I’m trying to get the Oxford community to do is catch up because the rest of the world has caught up to the fact that women’s sports are legit and they’re real,” said the coach. “So I’m not going to allow people to make it seem like what we do doesn’t matter. I’m not going to allow people to make it seem like our women are less than us. Because that is a false narrative out there, and the Oxford community needs to catch up to that, and that’s the truth.”
The Rebels, with a record of 14-5, currently hold the fourth spot in the SEC standings for this season. They recently secured an 81-70 victory against the Florida Gators, boosting their standing. Before their upcoming game against Tennessee, Coach Yo delivered a bold message to fans during her post-game news conference: “It’s disappointing when my team runs out here and has won a whole lot and we don’t get the crowd support that we deserve.”
She then continued that what people might say is, “‘She’s just complaining; she needs to shut up.’ Well, I’m not shutting up. I’m not shutting up. Do you know why? Because when I turn on the TV, when I look around, and when we go to other places, women’s sports are a real thing. And so I’m going to be the voice for that here. Because our community needs to be better, man.”
