Can Braylon Mullins handle the pressure of UConn's intricate offense and live up to his five-star hype?

“A national championship is the ultimate goal when you go to college,” Braylon Mullins stated when he committed to the UConn Huskies on Wednesday. Though Mullins is a five-star recruit and lauded for his shooting skills, it remains to be seen how he will adjust to the Huskies next season. Especially since Dan Hurley has a vision for his program, and require a little more of Mullins.

On Friday’s episode of Locked On UConn, Dan Meehan was present with Mark Zanetto revealing Hurley’s forte as a coach, which he opined Mullins will have to learn once he gets into the squad.

“So another thing that Hurley alluded to and Jay Wright actually commented on yesterday, it takes time once you get to campus. You only have got, I think 30 certain amount of hours in the summertime. 38, 32, whatever to practice with these guys. Their offense is the most intricate by far in America. It takes time to gel with the guys and just to learn the offense. It’s like a… QB learning the verbiage. Yeah when it gets the NFL in that regard,” Meehan stated.

Mullins is a five-star recruit who had offers from Indiana and North Carolina. While he visited them both in September, he did so for the Huskies in August. Though the exact details of his chat with Hurley aren’t known, the Greenfield-Central star revealed that talking to the HC made him feel needed in the squad. And he is determined to work hard, “brings the best” out of him, all while he believes the UConn’s playing style fits him the best.

But the Huskies’ offense is not an easy style to adapt to. “The most complex offense,” Jordan Sperber, a video director, had remarked, noting their off-ball screening and ball movement. So not matter how good of a player you currently are, Meehan believes it is going to take time to adjust and may not even get a chance to make it to the court immediately.

You might be top one of the best players and one of the most skilled players in the country as a freshman, it doesn’t matter. Because if you don’t learn this offense, you’re not going to be featured in the right way to even get the looks at the next level,” Meehan concluded.

While four of the starting five have departed to the NBA this year, possibly a few more next, including Alex Karaban, Dan Hurley admits there is going to be pressure on the unproven players. But Stephon Castle did fire up mid-season and Hurley seems to believe in Mullins so the No. 16-ranked player in the 2025 class has quite the year awaiting him.

Dan Hurley adds Braylon Mullins to his vision

Mullins is UConn’s third top 25, class of 2025 commit. Previously, the Huskies have committed Darius Adams (No. 19) and Eric Reibe (No. 23) in September and October, respectively, And then comes Mullins. The only other team right now in college basketball to do this is Duke which has 2 top 25 commits. Therefore, the aim of Hurley is simple, recruit top-class players, groom them well, and in turn their performances will help him win the title.

“Mullen 6’5″ combo guard out of Greenfield Indiana snatched away from the Hoosiers last night. With Braylon Mullins joining Darius Adams and Eric Reibe making this trio, arguably the best recruiting class in the country. And from what I’ve heard this was exactly the vision that Luke Murray and Dan Hurley started selling to all three of these players to come to UConn and together they build the top class in the nation now with Mullins committing that’s exactly what they’ve done,” Zanetto remarked.

Mullins averaged 19.4 points and shot 47.3% from 3-point range across 17 3SSB circuit games, which had Hurley and the coaching staff extend a scholarship last spring. And it is mutual. Hurley’s knack for winning and the Huskies providing the best fit for him on the basketball court won it for him. Whatever the challenges, the young talent is determined to win.
