Haley Cavinder is no stranger to making headlines, whether it’s lighting up the court or clapping back at critics. The Miami Hurricanes’ fifth-year senior delivered a masterclass both on and off the hardwood, proving that she’s as fierce as they come. And today’s game was no exception.

This Sunday afternoon, SMU came to the Watsco Center to lock horns with the Miami Hurricanes. Despite tough competition, the Cavinder twins and their teammates gave the fans plenty to cheer about. After a few minutes of tension, the Hurricanes withstood a furious rally to beat the Mustangs 70-63.

Watching from courtside seats were incoming Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson, both proudly wearing “Cavinder” T-shirts. Well, both stars are dating UM basketball-playing Cavinder twins– Hanna and Haley, respectively. The recent win was a treat, but that wasn’t the only reason to celebrate.

Haley Cavinder stood out as the game’s top scorer with 32 points. She went 10-of-16 shooting from the field, and six beyond the arc. While this may seem routine, it wasn’t. Scoring 32 points, Haley etched her name in the history books for the most 30-point games in a season (3) since 2010-2011.

“I was really proud of her. She showed great composure,” shared UM head coach Tricia Cullop. “A lot of teams are denying her, trapping her, hard hedging her. She sees all kinds of defenses. She’s a phenomenal shooter, phenomenal scorer, and competitor.” Haley is pure dominance on the court. However, even her incredible performances can’t shield her from familiar online trolls.

Haley Cavinder claps back with one word

When she uploaded a post showcasing her scores online, trolls and critics didn’t hold back. They immediately flooded the video with remarks she clearly didn’t appreciate. “7th-year senior,” wrote one spectator. Haley noticed and quickly clapped back with a simple correction: “*5th.”

Well, this isn’t new for her. In fact, something similar happened when her relationship with Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson first went public. “I was in Forever 21 having a great day with my mom and Hanna, and I got this post. I started looking at the comments about my face,” Haley shared.

Usually confident, the senior guard reveals she wasn’t immune to the effects the trolling could have, leading to a ‘mental breakdown’.

“I’m like, this is new, and obviously Jake is a great guy, but you don’t want to be called ugly on the internet 24/7, and your boyfriend sees it. That’s not going to make anyone feel cool.” Despite the initial challenges, Jake stood by her side, cheering her on through it all, just like he did courtside during this game. She seems to have channeled it all into her performance.
