The Michigan State Spartans have been facing three major challenges lately – costly turnovers, slow starts, and poor 3-point shooting. Despite holding the record for the third-longest winning streak in college basketball history and competing in 36 NCAA tournaments, the team is currently struggling in the 2023 NCAA season after dropping out of the top 5 seed.

With 25 straight appearances in the NCAA tournament and 10 Final Four trips under the leadership of Tom Izzo, Michigan State ranks as the sixth-most successful basketball team in the Big Ten. Their all-time NCAA tournament winning percentage is also sixth. But the current stats are hardly bringing any cheer to the team.

The team has been struggling to find their footing after losing the James Madison game, where they still seem to be figuring out how to play with their big shooter. On a positive note, the Spartans were able to make a comeback with the Southern Indians, bouncing back from their earlier setbacks.

The Spartans secured their first victory of the 2023–24 season with an impressive win over Southern Indiana. After losing to the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats in Palm Springs on Thanksgiving Day, the team returned home to the Breslin Center to take on the struggling Georgia Southern Eagles, who had yet to win a game all season. With a final score of 86-55, Michigan State dominated the game from start to finish, showcasing efficient control throughout.

Head coach Tom Izzo made several adjustments to the starting lineup, including replacing sophomore center Carson Cooper with senior center Mady Sissoko. Additionally, junior guard Holloman took the place of senior guard Hoggard.

Interestingly, the team has experienced dire circumstances previously, including a 1-2 start to the season. They did well in 1995–96, finishing with a record of 16–16 at the end of the season. However, their performances in 2005–06 and 2011–12, with overall records of 22–12 and 29–8, respectively, were unmatched. They had a similar circumstance in 2016–17, but they were able to swing things in their favor by establishing a 20–15 record.
