Wednesday and Thursday evenings are expected to bring some excitement for passionate basketball fans. The 2024 edition of the NBA Drafts provides a gateway for multiple talents from all around the globe to be a part of the most competitive league. However, there are also a handful of local talents who will be worthy additions to these star-studded franchises. The one who many think is at the summit is the back-to-back national champion, Donovan Clingan.
Much debate has gone into discussing the possible No.1 draft picks this time around. While many believe that the French duo of Zaccharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr can come out as top choices, some back the towering UConn giant Donovan Clingan and can also produce a surprise. Eminent NBA analyst Jay Bilas put forth this narrative alongside Scott Van Pelt at SportsCenter recently. “There are guys like Donovan Clingan from UConn that could be in play at No.1,” Bilas said, via ESPN.
Following this, he provides further insights into what the 7 ft 2 in center brings to the table if he’s picked by the Atlanta Hawks. The 60-year-old further added, “This is because Atlanta needs rim protection. They were 25th in the league in protecting the rim. And, he’s a big-time shot blocker and a very good rebounder that can anchor a defense.”

Clingan capped off his 2023-24 season with a block rate of 11.4% to go along with a defensive rating of 89.4. In addition to this, his win shares per 40 minutes of .302 and a 6.2 defensive box plus/minus also played their part in the Huskies’ consecutive championship run. Consequently, this ranked Donovan Clingan in the top 10 in all these aspects.
However, there are a handful of decent options for Clingan even if he doesn’t end up being No.1
Where can Donovan Clingan head if not Atlanta?
According to NBA’s Consensus Mock Draft, Donovan Clingan can be an overall 5th pick this year. By that theory, the Detroit Pistons can avail of his services for the time being.
Although, CBS Sports ranks him 2 places higher at 3rd which opens the doors of the Houston Rockets for him. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony thinks that he can be a favorite to go 7th. That way the fans can see him donning a Portland Trail Blazers shirt.
