The Huskies have done it again. Another tremendous show means that UConn has successfully defended its crown and becomes the first team since Florida Gators (2006,2007) to have their name on the NCAA title for two consecutive seasons. In yet another dominating display in this year’s NCAA tournament, the Huskies secured a comfortable 75-60 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers.

Much was talked about what should UConn do to handle the two-time national player of the year, Zach Edey. Well, head coach Dan Hurley seemed to have all the answers to that. As it turns out, he outdid the 7 ft 4 center despite his monumental double-double (37 points and 10 rebounds) through his team’s collective show of hands on the historic night.

For a second fixture in a row, every roster stepped up for Dan Hurley and handed him his second national championship at Connecticut. Four out of the five starters registered a double-digit score by the end of the night to counter the offensive onslaught posed by Zach Edey.

Donovan Clingan, who had 11 points and 5 rebounds next to his name, shot 5 of 8 from the field and converted his only free throw of the game. Meanwhile, senior guard Tristen Newton became the top performer with 20 points and 7 assists. He had 46% efficiency from the field and landed 2 out of the 5 beyond the arc attempts. A perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line added further value to his numbers.

Further, Stephon Castle (15 points and 5 rebounds) and Cam Spencer (11 points and 8 rebounds) also made valuable contributions by the end of the night. Castle was similar to Newton from the field (6 of 13) and had a three-pointer too. At the same time, Spencer was instrumental in the team’s defense with his blocks and turnovers, along with his shooting.

The unbeaten momentum of the Huskies

The last time Dan Hurley’s crew tasted defeat was their regular season 85-66 defeat against Creighton. Since then, they have been on a 12-game unbeaten streak which continued till they lifted the national championship. Not only this but apart from their game against St. John’s (95-90), all the victories have come with hefty margins. They may not have topped any statistics chart but finished their campaign with the achievement that mattered the most in the end.
