The LSU Tigers speared through Kent State to earn an important victory on their home turf. Angel Reese and Co. defeated the visitors by a comfortable margin. However, the No.14 of Kent State Katie Shumate made quite an impression against the defending champions.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t turn the tides in favor of her team as Kent lost the game 79-109. Nonetheless, she stood out and roared in front of the jam-packed crowd on enemy territory.

Kent State made an explosive start to the game as they led the Lady Tigers in the first quarter. Katie Shumate took the fight to the champions with her immaculate exhibition. She was in total control in the first quarter and led the scoring chart for her team. In addition to this, Shumate was scoring 3-pointers just for fun. The Tigers had no answer to her versatility as she scored 17 points and 6 rebounds in the first half. However, she wasn’t given many chances in the second half as she managed to add only 5 points and 4 rebounds. The Red Shirt senior registered her first double-double as she ended her night with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The 9,117 fans in attendance couldn’t help but admire this talented prospect of The Golden Flashes. The Lady Tigers took command of the game with an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter. However, Katie brought her team back within touching distance scoring 12 of her team’s points. The Golden Flashes trailed by just two points at half-time with the scoreboard reading 39-37.
Despite being completely humbled by LSU in the second half, Katie kept on fighting for the Golden Flashes and added glory to her family’s name.

Katie Shumate’s connection with basketball
Katie Shumate has basketball in her genes. She has ingrained her talent from her father J.R. Shumate who has been a Division I player himself. Later, he was the head coach of the girl’s basketball team of Newark High School. Shumate’s son and Katie’s brother J.T. Shumate also represented the Wildcats in Division I as a forward. The three of them headlined Newark together and made it the top team in Division I basketball.
Regardless of ending on the losing side, Katie Shumate showed what she’s capable of. By scoring a double-double against a tough opponent like LSU, she has given proof of her resilient mentality. It’s only a matter of time before we witness this young talent earning many more accolades in her career.
