College basketball is all about honing budding players who later go into the NBA and become stars. One such potential NBA star was signed by the Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday. This was one of their major moves that saw Jayden Quaintance sign under coach John Calipari.

As per Lex 18, Quaintance had major offers from 19 schools including Florida, Missouri, Ohio State and USF. 

Is Jayden Quaintance a boon for the Wildcats?

Quaintance is a 6 foot 9 inch player who is known for his athleticism, and great shooting skills. He is also applauded by critics and fans for having exemplary passing prowess. Despite his height, the 16-year-old can quickly cover coast to coast and takes advantage of his tall frame when rebounding.

He has a soft pair of hands that aid in setting up games as a playmaker. Quaintance is known for his aggressive skills and due to his height he can challenge the defenders. Once inside the paints, Quaintance can be a treat to watch for his above the rim shots and dunks. He is also proficient with three pointers and mid range shots.

Quaintance averaged a respectable 6.7 points with 6.5 rebounds in the six games he played for the USA U16 team, propelling them to a gold medal at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship. He was also a part of Overtime elite league with an astounding average of 14.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per contest.

Quaintance can be a top pick for the NBA draft when becomes eligible for the same. Considering he has reclassified to the 2024 class means he wouldn’t be draft eligible up until 2026 and can spend around 2 years with the Wildcats.

Coach Calipari’s Top Gun

Quaintance is the head coach John Calipari’s second five-star recruit alongside guard Travis Perry. Post his cementing his place with the Kentucky, the university has entered into the top three.

With him signing with the Kentucky means additional talent which can definitely provide the impetus for the Wildcats to reach heights. The team had a major upset during the 2022-23 season when they were upended by Saint Peter in the overtime by a decent margin of 79-85. Though they were second seeded, they couldn’t perform during the clutch moments that resulted in them losing the match. It was the maiden instance when the Wildcats suffered a premature exit from the tournament under Calipari.

With the addition of Quaintance, the Lexington team seems to be building up a formidable line-up for the 2024 under one of the most respected coaches. They do not look demotivated from their last year’s exit as they defeated the NM State and TAMUC by huge margins. With Quaintance, they’ve perhaps got the big moment player they were looking for during their previous NCAA season.
