There’s no doubt that Dick Vitale knows NCAA ball. After decades of covering the sport, and loving it to death, ESPN’s legendary announcer knows what he’s talking about. However, there’s a reason the playoffs are called the March Madness. Louisville versus Creighton was always supposed to be a tough matchup, with both teams evenly matched. Some even questioned the Cardinals’ seeding, calling it too high, but not Dicky-V.
The legendary broadcaster was convinced of Louisville’s grit and determination giving them an edge over the Bluejays. Before the matchup, he tweeted in Louisville’s support, keeping them as his favorites for the matchup. “I thought Cards should have been a # 5 seed – will @patkelsey‘s D be able contain super 7’1 Ryan Kalkbrenner ! I think C Hepburn & T Edwards dynamic duo lead Louisville to a tough W.” However, that was not to be.
Creighton started with a bang against the higher-seeded Cardinals, taking a 15-point first-half lead, and Louisville could never recover. Ashworth, Neal, and Kalkbrenner looked unstoppable on the hardwood floor. Of course, Vitale gave the Bluejays their well-deserved flowers in a new post on X.

The @BluejayMBB with a terrific 1st half especially offensively vs @LouisvilleMBB as they lead Cardinals 49 – 34 ! The @BIGEASTMBB was stronger top to bottom than @accmbb all year but Cards much better than they played in 1st half .

Today’s Bluejays’ 89-75 victory has already messed up Vitale’s bracket for this year’s Big Dance. Creighton’s upset doesn’t just bruise Vitale’s ego—it scrambles his South Region outlook. He had Auburn, led by Broome’s 18.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, dispatching Louisville before bowing out to Michigan’s size in the Sweet 16. Now, the Bluejays step into the Tigers’ crosshairs, bringing a 37.9% three-point defense that could test Auburn’s lethal outside game. Now, Creighton will look towards their next matchup, which will most likely end up being the SEC regular season champs–Auburn. Can they manage two upsets in a row? And what exactly did they do today that led them to such an overpowering win? Let’s find out.
Creighton’s offense crushes Dick Vitale’s predictions as they eye an Auburn upset
Pat Kelsey and his team looked helpless against the Bluejays in their first-round exit, and for good reason too! The Creighton Bluejays were relentless in their pursuit of excellence, they kept asking questions that Louisville didn’t have the answer to. But where exactly did they win this game?
The easy answer is their offense. Greg McDermott’s team played an insanely efficient game tonight and the numbers back it up. The Bluejays shot an astounding 57.1% from the field, as compared to Louisville’s 42.9, and displayed absolute command from three as well!

Steven Ashworth and Jackson McAndrew combined for a total of 7 made threes from fifteen attempts and were a big reason for Creighton’s success. Not to mention, the Bluejays out-rebounded the Cardinals, not allowing second opportunities for their opponents.
They might have cruised through this game, but their next matchup won’t be so easy. Louisville was supposed to be trouble for the Tigers, and now the Bluejays must take their place. To be fair to McDermott’s team, Creighton’s perimeter defense has definitely been up to standard in their first round showing. They held the explosive Cardinals to under 30% from deep, and they’re showing good signs for future matchups.

If Creighton manage to stifle Auburn at the three-point line, they might have a shot at bringing down the championship contenders. At this stage? No one is counting them out. The Bluejays’ frontcourt will have a tough task in the paint against Broome, but if their perimeter defense stays solid, they definitely can send Auburn home. Stay tuned for more action, however, as March has only just begun!
