Kim Mulkey is one of the most talked about personalities in the history of women’s basketball. The 61-year-old is the catalyst behind LSU’s championship run last season. Consequently, she attracted quite a lot of publicity and fame that eventually made her the highest-paid Women’s College Basketball Coach.

Some reports, however, suggest that LSU is going through a financial crisis despite the team’s success and the national championships. Nonetheless, it doesn’t seem to affect the lucrative package of the four-time NCAA champion coach.

LSU has currently signed Mulkey with a 10-year contract which awards her a whopping $ 3.2 million per annum till 2033. This is a further extension to her previous contract with them which was valid till 2029 and promised her $ 2.5 million every year. As a result, she sits at the top of the highest-paid college basketball coaches. Next to her is the Huskies coach Geno Auriemma who is currently paid $2.9 million per season. Another stalwart figure in this list is the three-time WBCA National Coach of the Year Dawn Staley, who earns $2.7 million for her contributions.

In addition to this, Mulkey also has a better earning than some of the familiar faces from the NBA world. Players like Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller, Gabe Vincent, and Jeff Green are a few among the many names who earn way less than Mulkey’s pay grade.

Anyhow, Mulkey’s handsome salary couldn’t hide the financial troubles LSU is going through at the moment.

The financial issues continue to torment LSU’s treasury. The athletic department report suggests that there has been a deficit of $8 million. The program could only generate a revenue of $2.5 million. Following this, the expenses account for nearly $10.3 million which includes a significant portion allotted to the salaries and bonuses of the coaching staff.

A major reason behind this crisis has been the flourishing NIL deals of its players from heavyweight brands like Reebok and McDonalds. These deals affect directly LSU’s revenue books as they draw more attention to players thereby increasing the sale of its tickets as well as the merchandise.

A difficult phase both on and off the court for the defending champions. While Angel Reese and Co. are putting in their best efforts to keep things in check on the hardwood, the athletics department needs to come up with something fast to handle LSU’s financial hurdles. We will have to wait and see how quickly the Lady Tigers can revive themselves from this tricky situation.
