When it comes to coaching, Dawn Staley isn’t afraid to make tough decisions. And it’s safe to say that one of those decisions altered the trajectory of Sania Feagin’s career. Reportedly, Staley hit Feagin with what could only be described as a scary ultimatum—she was about to be removed from the starting lineup. It’s the kind of moment that could break a player, but for Feagin, it sparked something much bigger.
Instead of accepting her fate, Feagin reportedly sent a private text to Staley, asking for one more chance. The message seemed to have been the one Staley had been waiting to see from the senior forward. For she was soon back on the starting lineup and never looked back.
The Gamecock #20 has started every single game this year. A stark contrast from just 2 last season, out of the 38 games she played. The scoring average has also improved to a career-high 7.4 points, along with 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. Feagin is having her best season yet and the head coach seems more than pleased.

“She hasn’t let any of us down,” Staley said as per an X post by Lulu Kesin, reflecting on Feagin’s impressive response. This wasn’t just a quick turnaround—it was a hard-earned evolution for a player fighting for this kind of trust. And it has shown.
Dawn Staley said she told Sania Feagin she was taking her out of the starting lineup. Feagin then texted her later on, asking for one more chance.

Earlier this month, junior forward Ashlyn Watkins, South Carolina’s best post defender, suffered a torn ACL. The future of the season suddenly seemed uncertain. But Staley did not have to look anywhere else but her own starting line up. Feagin was ready to step in.
Feagin’s loyalty fuel her rise as a Gamecocks star, thanks to Dawn Staley
Feagin’s offensive contributions have been crucial, but it’s her defense that’s been even more impressive. In a game against Texas A&M, she shut down star Lauren Ware, holding her to just 1-for-9 shooting, while blocking two shots. But she didn’t stop there. Feagin went on to set a career-high with six blocks against Texas. Her impact against LSU was undeniable as well. Playing a career-high 36 minutes, she was all over the court, recording 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.

With all that, it’s easy to see why Staley praises Feagin. “Feagin is probably one of my more favorite players only because she stuck with us in a time and day when it’s so much easier to just leave,” Staley said. “She could have been starting for someone else… This is what her best effort looks like on a consistent basis.”
Feagin’s loyalty to South Carolina has been tested throughout the years, especially during times when she wasn’t always a starter. But with the support of her family and Staley’s guidance, she chose to stay and fight for her place. As Staley put it, “It’s intuitiveness, the loyalty, and her parents are great people who wanted her to play more… they knew the talent that their daughter had, and they knew that if she stayed here, we were going to pull it out of her.”

Now, Feagin plays a key role in helping the Gamecocks stay at the top. It’s clear the tough love she received was exactly what she needed. She’s become one of the most reliable players on the roster.“I think she’s going to put herself in a real good position to play at the next level,” Staley confidently stated.
