Can Chloe Kitts handle the pressure and lead the Gamecocks to another national championship?

For South Carolina’s game against NC State in Charlotte, everything seemed perfect—except for the absence of one key player. The team’s forward was not injured but had to miss the Gamecocks’ 2nd game due to an “academic policy issue.” However, she came back and roaringly so in the very next game. After a 19-point performance against Coppin State, yet another impressive game awaited. “We’re incredibly proud of her progress,” shared head coach Dawn Staley before the matchup. However, it would soon turn to caution.

In the post-game conference, Staley expressed some concern about Chloe Kitts. “Chloe has to make some adjustments,” remarked the coach about the standout forward, who is currently averaging 17 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Kitts has been a critical part of the Gamecocks’ success, leading the team in both scoring and rebounds, which has made her a focal point for opposing teams.

“She’s got the target on her back as far as the scouting report,” Staley added, observing how tighter defense affected Kitts’ performance. Yet, even under pressure, Kitts delivered with 14 solid points and seven rebounds in the Gamecocks’ dominant 95-44 win over the East Carolina Pirates.

But the HC, interestingly noted that it would be alright to just tone down the scoring a little to off put the opponents, which Kitts had managed, missing a few layups (5-of-10 from the field).

“She probably needs to just kind of make them forget about it a little bit and then come back. Sometimes it does a defense good that you’re not going to be as aggressive as you’ve been,” she added. Staley’s coaching expertise speaks for itself, and she’s confident in Kitts’ ability to bounce back. “I am not worried about Chloe,” she assures.

This game also marked a pivotal moment for the Gamecocks

While a 4-0 record might seem routine for South Carolina, this time, there was a twist. Staley seized the opportunity to experiment, ensuring all 12 players saw court time. A strong 13-0 opening run allowed Staley to mix and match lineups, even opting for a full line change with all five players at once.

Staley admitted that she did so to keep things interesting. “The energy wasn’t there, the effort wasn’t there,” she noted. The HC is determined to secure another national championship with a new-look roster following the departure of Kamilla Cardoso to the WNBA. With high expectations to match last year’s historic 38-0 run, South Carolina is seeking a replacement for Cardoso’s impact.

Both Chloe Kitts and MiLaysia Fulwiley are stepping up as potential stars. In this game, Kitts scored 14 points, while Fulwiley added 12, helping secure the Gamecocks’ 61st consecutive home win and 42nd overall. But the big question remains: Can the Gamecocks overcome stiff competition to claim the national championship title? Stay tuned to find out!
