Team USA water polo fans jumped with joy as Emily Ausmus scored the eighth goal during the second quarter against Greece. Among the fans who were applauding the Team USA water polo squad on Saturday was South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley. She even took to the social media networking site Instagram to laud Ashleigh Johnson who saved the day for Team USA.
Staley live from the stadium uploaded a snap of the scoreboard and enumerated that she thoroughly enjoyed the strategy of Johnson. “Hey @usawp (W) your goalie is incredible. TV does not do this game any justice. The aggressive play in the paint (basketball term) or front of the goalie is worth the price of admission,” Staley wrote.
The 54-year-old even joked that she might have been the reason why Greece was able to score a goal after a one-sided 7-goal performance by Team USA. Next, when Ausmus hit another goal, Staley breathed a sigh of relief and sat down at her place. “In the meantime, we are up 7-0 in the 2nd quarter! Make that 7-1! Let me get off here! 🥹🥹🥹 Welp that’s a goal for us 8-1. I’m safe again!” Staley added.

With Rachel Fattal leading the way, the USA scored their first goal in the second minute of the match. Team USA, subsequently, dominated Greece during the first quarter as it ended on a high note of 3-0 for them. The next quarter saw Johnson coming to the forefront as Greece tried to start a fightback. Johnson saved the ball several times and that had the USA ending the second quarter at a score of 9-2.
The third quarter was particularly slow as both teams concentrated on their defenses. Nonetheless, it would have been a delight for Staley who had implemented her defensive masterclass during the Championship Finale against Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes. Moving on, in the fourth quarter, both teams showed their offensive strategies as the game finished in the USA’s favor with a 15-6 tally. However, Staley has taken her charm to a few other games in Paris.
Dawn Staley is enjoying her time at the Paris Olympics
Staley had posted a clip of the Team USA from the Olympic parade in which the players were waving the flag. Dressed in Team USA blazers, the event had its opening ceremony on Friday and that was a moment of joy for the fans. Staley captioned the clip, “U S A! U S A! U S A!! Let’s gooooo BIG RED, WHITE and BLUE!!!” She appeared extremely enthusiastic for what lay ahead.
Next, she even shared a snap of the NBA star Joel Embiid donning sunglasses that looked like the Olympic rings miniatures, which garnered a lot of comments immediately. All this points to Staley’s zest for sports even though she is not a player anymore.
