Remember last year when UConn lost all its starters? Yes, it felt like a disaster waiting to happen. But Dan Hurley pulled off a roster rebuild that had fans believing a three-peat was still in the cards. Liam McNeeley, Ahmad Nowell, and Isaiah Abraham came in. Transfers like Aidan Mahaney and Tarris Reed Jr. joined the squad. Hurley probably thought they had things under control and chasing three-peat was the only thing on their mind. Well, plot twist! There is a bigger issue on the cards.

UConn might be heading into yet another massive roster shake-up, and Hurley himself is bracing for it. On CBS’s ‘60 Minutes,’ Hurley straight-up admitted that half of this year’s roster is either considering hitting the transfer portal or already has their next school picked out.

Let that sink in…50% or more of his current team could be gone!

This news comes right after a season that already saw the likes of Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, Tristen Newton, and Cam Spencer turn pro. And now, Hassan Diarra, Samson Johnson, and Alex Karaban are set to graduate. Karaban does have the option to stick around for another season, though.

So yes, UConn might not look like UConn—again!

Before we get too deep into the rebuild conversation, there’s still the small matter of, you know, trying to make history. No men’s team has won three straight NCAA titles since UCLA’s golden era in the ‘60s and ‘70s. And Hurley has made it crystal clear—if the Huskies don’t get that three-peat, he’ll see this season as a failure.

And the team’s road to history has been anything but smooth. Remember the Maui Invitational? They lost all three games. It was brutal. But despite the rollercoaster season, the Huskies closed out their regular season on a high note with a dominant 81-50 win over Seton Hall.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Dan Hurley pull off another miracle, or is UConn's three-peat dream already shattered?

Have an interesting take?

Solo Ball led the charge with 17 points, nailing three three-pointers. Senior Night was a special one. UConn honored Diarra, Johnson, and Karaban, and all three put on a show. Karaban dropped 14 points with three triples and 10 boards, Johnson added 14 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, and Diarra dished out six assists.

Despite these feel-good moments, the Huskies have some glaring issues. Fouling remains a major problem for their bigs, especially Johnson and Reed. Sophomore Youssouf Singare, the only other true center, hasn’t developed enough to be a reliable backup.

Then there’s the backcourt. Aidan Mahaney was supposed to be the guy at point guard, but his size and decision-making have been shaky against elite competition. That’s forced heavier workloads on guys like Karaban, Solo Ball, McNeeley, and Diarra.

And to make matters worse, Jaylin Stewart and Jayden Ross haven’t progressed as quickly as Hurley hoped. So, UConn is staring at some serious hurdles before they can even think about making a deep tournament run. And the three-peat dream looks quite shattered.

Now, if you’re a UConn fan and still stuck at roster overhaul news (well..we are, too) and feeling a little anxious about the future, here’s some good news: Hurley’s 2025 recruiting class is loaded.

A bright future? Meet UConn’s stacked 2025 class

Eric Reibe, the No. 2 center in the senior class, committed to UConn over Kansas, Creighton, Indiana, and Oregon. The 6’11” lefty has elite passing and screening abilities, a high basketball IQ, and can stretch the floor with his shooting. He’s a perfect fit for Hurley’s system.

Before Reibe, Jeremiah Adams locked in his commitment. The 6’5” combo guard from New Jersey is one of the best shooters in his class and has a knack for scoring off the dribble and creating for others. He’s currently playing at La Lumiere School in Indiana, sharpening his skills before heading to Storrs.

Then there’s Jacob Furphy, a 6’5” guard who made waves during Australia’s U18 Asia Cup run. He averaged 16.8 points and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 46.4% from deep. He’s part of the NBA Global Academy, so don’t let the lack of a star rating fool you—this guy can hoop.

And to top it off, UConn landed Braylon Mullins, a top-25 recruit who’s been lighting up the Adidas 3SSB circuit. In 17 games, he averaged 19.4 points and shot a ridiculous 47.3% from three. Mullins isn’t just a shooter, though—he’s a high-IQ player who makes smart reads and moves well without the ball. He is expected to be one of the starters next season.

All in all, with another roster overhaul looming and the pressure of a historic three-peat hanging over their heads, the Huskies are in for a wild few months. But if Hurley can somehow navigate the chaos and keep UConn in the national conversation, the future still looks bright.
