#21 Dayton shines differently this season, as it is successfully maintaining its consecutive wins. And, with the recent win against St. Louis, there is another addition, constituting it as an 11-game winning streak. Notably, the Flyers have been doing well with a season record of 12-2. Moreover, they rank at #1 in the Atlantic 10 conference with a collective score of 74.2 points per game.

Significantly, most of the credit goes to the program’s power forward DaRon Holmes II, who has been living up to the expectations in the finest way possible.

Meet DaRon Holmes II- the Flyers’ mean machine

Starting his basketball career at the Millenium High School in Goodyear, Arizona, DaRon Holmes II was awarded the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior as he averaged 23.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 3.1 assists per game. Later on, he took a transfer and moved to Montverde Academy in Florida, and then again to AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Arizona.

Having offers from programs like Arizona, Marquette, and California, he finally committed to Dayton of the Atlantic 10 conference, where he is playing like a fireball. This season he has been averaging 17.7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, shooting with a field goal percentage of 53.7%. Beating down St. Louis in a recent game, he scored 25 of his 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks delivering an outstanding performance he led the Flyers to a 70-65 victory.

As a freshman, Holmes started all 35 games and led his team with a score of 12.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. Named as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year he set a school record in blocks by scoring 81 blocks in a single season. He was also named the second-team All-Atlantic 10 and to the conference All-Defense Team in 2022.

Last year, as a sophomore he was named first-team All-Atlantic 10 team by averaging 18.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 9.1 blocks per game. DaRon did face a little dilemma last year, as he declared for the 2023 NBA draft in April, however, he later on withdrew his name and announced his return to Dayton for his junior season.

Player of the Week – DaRon Holmes

In addition to his recent performance, last week DaRon was named the National Player of the Week by NCAA March Madness and Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Week, sharing the award with Richmond’s Jordan King. The awards came after his performance against Duquesne where he scored 33 points and 12 rebounds.

Notably, he made 12 of 18 shots made including 3 3-point shots. Currently, Holmes is leading the league with 18.7 PPG and is the only player in the top 10 who is excelling in scoring, rebounds, field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage and blocked shots.
