Lanier hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and attended The Ensworth School. But his journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. Despite playing three years of prep basketball, he barely saw the court until his senior year. And yet, when his time came, he went off—averaging 22.8 points while hitting over 45% from three. That’s when people really started to take notice. 

Hooping runs in the family. His dad, Thomas Lanier, was a sharpshooting stretch-four at Lipscomb in the 1990s, dropping over 1,000 career points. Thomas passed down his shooting wisdom to his son, teaching him everything from proper follow-through to release mechanics. “He always told me to hold my follow-through and act like you are digging in a cookie jar,” Chaz recalled. By the time Lanier hit his senior year, everything clicked. His shot was smooth, his form was textbook, and his midrange game was already deadly. 

North Florida took a chance on him, one of just two schools to offer him a scholarship. Once at North Florida, Lanier honed his shot into the lethal weapon it is today. He learned to shoot up, not out, refining his arc until it was near perfection. His 3-pointer was a straight-up howitzer, either splashing through the net or smashing into the back of the rim. Over four years, he worked on his release speed, eliminating any wasted motion. Ospreys coaches even used pool noodles in practice to contest his shots. Didn’t matter, he still got them off with ease. 

After a breakout senior year averaging 19.7 points and knocking down 106 threes at 44%, Lanier entered the transfer portal. On May 24, 2024, he made his move to Tennessee. The Vols haven’t sought to change Lanier’s shot but to fine-tune around the elite motion. 

This year, he has made 110 3-pointers on 40% 3-point shooting and is averaging 17.7 points.
