Fans might remember it since he was the lead voice of the event for CBS in 1991, and he’s called every Final Four since. In 2023, he decided to step away from the Big Dance duties. But the love for Houston Cougars pulled him in.

For over three decades, Nantz’s voice was synonymous with March Madness, calling iconic moments like Villanova’s 1985 upset and Duke’s 1992 buzzer-beater. His final broadcast in 2023 capped a 32-year run, leaving a void for fans accustomed to his signature
“Hello, friends” opening.“There is the voice of the Masters and proud Houston alum, Jim Nantz.” The CBS commentators further added, ” We chatted with Jim before; he is a huge Houston basketball fan.” The 65-year-old was in attendance as the Tennessee Volunteers faced the Houston Cougars in the Elite Eight matchup. The Houston alum’s reasoning for quitting was also very simple.

“I’m not retiring… You’re never going to walk away from the NFL — it’s too big — and golf is deep in my heart,” Jim Nantz said. But, he added, “Something had to go.” The decision was made so he could focus more on his family and his kids. The 65-year-old has 3 children from his 2 marriages. From his first marriage of 26 years, he has 1 daughter, while during his second marriage, he was blessed with a son and a daughter. Jim’s first daughter, Caroline, was born in April 1994.

Three kids were in attendance as Jim Nantz received honor from the Houston Cougars
He got married again in 2012 to Courtney Richards and two years later, they were blessed with a daughter, Finley. Jameson, Jim’s only son, was born in 2016, and the father described the moment to the tee. “My boy definitely has a sense of occasion.” The reason he said that is that the son was born a day before the coverage of Super Bowl 50.
That’s why his stepping away from the NCAA tournament makes sense as he wants to be home spending more time with his young family. Last year in September 2024, the family cherished an important for Jim Nantz. The University of Houston honored him with a banner at the Fertitta Center. “To go back and have all three of my kids with me. My oldest Caroline. My Finley who turns 10 this week. She’s all excited. [And] My little boy Jamo.”

Even though father duties take priority over professional commitments. But the excitement of the Big Dance attracted the Cougars alum to the seat during the Elite Eight matchup. Luckily for the Houston fans, the team had a commendable lead thanks to a 34-15 display at the halfway mark.
