Kansas entered the season with high expectations, ranked No. 1 in the preseason NCAA Coach’s Poll. However, as the season has unfolded, things haven’t gone exactly as planned for Bill Self, with the Jayhawks encountering more challenges than anticipated.

Kansas had already been struggling, going just 5-5 in their last 10 games, but Tuesday night took things to a whole new low. Facing BYU in Provo, the Jayhawks were completely outmatched from the opening tip. The Cougars came out firing and never took their foot off the gas, handing Kansas one of the worst losses in program history, a crushing 91-57 blowout.

This wasn’t just another loss, it was Kansas’ worst-ever loss as a ranked team against an unranked opponent. Kansas fans are reaching a boiling point, and for good reason. After a string of inconsistent performances, the humiliating loss to BYU has sparked serious doubts about Bill Self’s tactics this season.

Some are even calling for the legendary coach to step down who happens to be the highest-paid college coach in the country earning $9.6 million per season, and $28.6 million for his remaining contract which of course gets extended again due to the nature of his contract!

As expected, social media erupted as Kansas fans and college basketball watchers reacted to the Jayhawks’ historic collapse. Let’s take a look at some of the fan reactions.

Fans fume as Bill Self and co crumble down

One stunned fan couldn’t believe what he was witnessing! With emotions running high, he took to social media to voice his frustration, posting, “We are at the point of having the conversation that Bill Self isn’t a good enough coach in this era for Kansas Basketball”

Do you know how bad things have to be for someone to even suggest this? Bill Self has been the face of Kansas basketball since 2003, and in all those years, he has never finished a season ranked outside the top four. That level of consistency is unheard of. But this season? That streak is in serious jeopardy.

the Jayhawks currently sitting at No. 23, aren’t just fighting to stay in the top four; they’re battling to prove they even belong in the top 25 at all. A sentence that would have been unthinkable just months ago is now a harsh reality in Lawrence.

Even the Kansas haters couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for Bill Self after this disaster. One fan, who clearly enjoys taking shots at the Jayhawks, took to X with a mix of mock sympathy and brutal honesty saying, ” I make fun of kansas basketball (and the whole state) as much as possible, but this is now sad. Bill Self is an all time great coach. He’s gone after this year. Well earned retirement. We’ll see if the brand will continue under a new coach. I hope they turn into an abyss.”

There’s no debating Bill Self’s status as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history. After all, not many get the honor of signing a lifetime contract with a program as prestigious as Kansas. But at the same time, it’s easy to see why so many love to root against the Jayhawks. They’ve been a powerhouse for decades, one of the most consistent programs in the country, and when a giant stumbles, the haters are always ready to pile on the pressure!

Well, maybe Kansas’ historic dominance is finally running out of steam. At least, that’s what some fans believe. One took to X to voice what many are starting to wonder,  “Is this the end of the Bill Self era in Kansas?”

Bill Self’s resume at Kansas is nothing short of legendary, 832 wins, a .768 win percentage, and two national championships have solidified his place among the all-time greats. With a legacy this monumental, it’s hard to imagine Kansas basketball without him. But should he really walk away now?

I’m not so sure! The Jayhawks just landed a massive recruit in Darryn Peterson, the second-best player in the 2025 class. His decision to commit was largely because of Self’s coaching, and with Peterson set to join next year, Kansas could be on the brink of a new era! One that could redefine the future of the program. If I were Bill Self, I would 100% stay and continue fighting.
